DR. STEPHEN S. WISE
taining grave threats should Hun
gary not discontinue the deporta
tion to the death-camps of the Jews.
Simultaneously, through the offices
of his friend, Dr. Ehrenpreis, the
Swedish Chief-Rabbi, he succeeded
in motivating the aged Swedish
king, Gustav V, to send a personal
wire to the same effect to the same
Regent. The Regent yielded. On
July 19, he suspended the deporta
tions. Some 400,000 Hungarian Jews
were saved . . .

And so I came to detect a signifi
cant difference between Dr. Wise
and other great personalities.
“None is great in the sight of his
chamberlain”, runs a German prov
erb. In fact, getting near a famous
man, one, as a rule, grows dis
appointed. One is bound to notice
that even the greatest man is hu
man, with shortcomings and weak
nesses. Quite often great men have
great defects. . . .
Dr. Wise seemed to be the ex
ception to this rule. The nearer
one got to him, the greater his
figure grew, his great human quali
ties becoming more transparent.

Leading figures, as anyone might
have observed, overrate, as a rule,
their own significance. They be
come self-centered.
Not a trace of this morbid mental
deflection could be noticed in Dr.
Wise. Wherever you met him, in
the street, in his study or at a
gathering, he was always the same:
serene, calm and of Olympic tran
quility. He was full of interest and
attention. He had always a num
ber of questions to ask you and
even the slightest detail did not
evade his attention.
It was almost difficult to believe
that this man was in daily touch
with the leading figures of the
country, with the senators, scien
tists, bishops and authors. He was
direct and plain. Yes, I must say,
even at the risk of being ridiculed,
he was modest.

And he possessed what is the
crown of all virtues: a good heart.
I wonder, how many of you know
that he never left a letter un
answered. Even if it came from
the humblest petitioner. And his
answers were none of those routine,
smooth evasions and ‘‘My-heart-
breaks-but-leave-me-alone” re
fusals. He gave much thought to
every request and really did what
ever he could. I have direct knowl
edge of the fact that he heavily sup
ported persons unknown to him,
victims of Nazi brutalities. In
complicated cases, requiring local
information, he would ask my opin
ion. I happen to have his last memo
