"Happiness Begins at Home"
tressed by the loving care of a good
wife.
Another patient, P. M., is now back
in his home in South Africa, having
been brought to the Cushing V.A.
Hospital for rehabilitation at the
special request of the British Army,
in which he served with distinction.
He is now considerably rehabili
tated and is living in South Africa
in a measure of ease and comfort.
Mr. M. was a rare, intellectual per
son, a lawyer, and the product of
a rather well-to-do family. Not
only is he exceedingly well read but
he has a superb analytical mind,
and it was really a great joy to
spend an hour in conversation with
him discussing literature, both an
cient and modern, and world af
fairs, particularly matters pertain
ing to the British Empire on which
he is thoroughly informed.
I mention these facts because
they give a picture of the life of
this remarkable person. He is
handsome and distinguished in ap
pearance and had every promise of
a great career which, naturally,
was completely altered because of
his paraplegic condition. But I am
happy to state that, despite all his
handicaps, he no doubt will be a
success in his community and can
be regarded as a man who has ex
ceptional influence on all the pa
tients at the hospital. Knowing
him and his background, I look
upon him with admiration. The
men at the hospital still speak of
him with great affection and re
spect, even though he has already
been away for several months. I
found him fully reconciled to his
physical status; he never uttered
a word of complaint. Although he
did not glorify himself as an ex
ample and martyr, neither did he
bewail or lament his sad condition.
I still correspond with him and
am highly encouraged by the fine
letters he sends. He attended ser
vices regularly and found consider
able inspiration in his Jewish re
ligious associations.
There is a boy whom I shall call
I. N., whose case is extraordinarily
different from the others. Unfortu
nately, I do not know much about
his life before he came to the hos
pital. He seems to be rather un
communicative in this respect and
he very seldom attends a religious
service. This is rather exceptional
because I have never met a man
at the hospital whose will not to
attend religious services I did not
eventually alter for the better. But
this boy, although he constantly
promises that he will attend the
services, has for over a year now
avoided them as much as possible.
He did offer to come to the Seder
which I arranged at the hospital.
But although he was at the door of
the mess hall where we were to
conduct the Seder, he had himself
wheeled away because he felt he
was not properly dressed.
I am told by a few friends who
know him rather well that he is
courting a non-Jewish girl and
they feel that is possibly one rea
son why he avoids attending ser
vices. Since I am not supposed to
