Hills of Judea by Rivkak Rieger
lcm, particularly the panoramic
views from the top of Mt. Scopus.
There, at one’s feet, lies the City
and its environs — City of Joy, and
City of Sorrow.
The picturesqueness of the ter
rain and the incongruity of the old,
old land crossed by modern motor
roads are brought out with quiet
strength in the views of the Ti
berias and Safed sections. And the
old crooked streets of Safed seem
to invite the onlooker to take a
walk and lose himself in memories.
Rivkah Rieger’s views of the Old
City of Jerusalem, the bazaars, the
streets, the Hurvah Synagogue, the
ancient homes, are priceless now,
not only intrinsically, but senti
mentally, for most of these have
been destroyed.
The portraits are exceedingly
lifelike. The artist catches both the
likeness and the personality and, it
would seem, the mood of her sub
jects.
It is in the floral pieces that the
colors run riot. Always luminous
and excellently blended, the bril
liant hues and vivid greens and
ieds melt into a neutral but never
somber background, with telling
effect. Yet the artist understands
the use of subdued coloring also.
When she had no flowers to paint
she used the thistles which grew in
profusion in and around Jerusalem.
Rivkah Rieger paints out of love
for her subjects. There is no sad
ness in her work. There is a gentle
strength and dignity which impress
the viewer with the feeling of
wishing to own pictures. It is said
that the test of a picture is a favor
able response to the question: “Can
jou live with it?’’ One can live
with any of Rivkah Rieger’s works.

Benny's "Cag Catcher"
She's Petite Jane Tucker,
One-Time Society Reporter
by LEON CUTTERMAN
A former society reporter is now
Jack Benny’s “gag catcher.” She
is petite Jane Tucker, the Jack
Benny script girl. Janie, as she’s
known to everyone connected with
the show, sits in with Benny and
his four writers and “catches” the
gags as the five comedy experts
toss them about. What she gets
down on paper is what approxi
mately 20,000,000 Americans will
hear the following Sunday when
the Jack Benny show' goes on the
air. It’s a job that demands more
than a quick ear and a knowledge
of shorthand.
Janie never intended to work in
Hollywood or become a script girl.
She left her native Montana to
work in San Francisco. Before she
worked for a Montana newspaper
as society reporter, she spent years
studying for her degree in journal
ism at the University of Montana,
and handling publicity for the uni
versity.
In San Francisco an employment
agency got her what was to be a
temporary job as script girl for
Benny, then in San Francisco to
do a show'. Jack liked her work
so well he asked her to come to
Hollywood. She’s been here since
and isn’t sorry.
The writing of a Jack Benny
show is still fascinating to Jane.
“Mr. Benny, the writers — Sam
Perrin, George Balzer, John Tacka-
berry and Milt Josefsberg — and
I get together after the story line
has already been worked out,” she
says. “They know what sort of
a show they want, but the comedy
lines have yet to be written.
