Brunswick —Early Days
“. . . In Brunswick a B'nai
B’rith Lodge was established in
1879 jointly with the community
of Darien. In 1886 a congregation
was formed by 22 charter mem
bers. By 1888 the congregation
Beth Tefilah was well estab
lished, with an officiating rabbi.
Rev, Eisenberg. B. Hirsch was
then president. In 1895. the con
gregation had sixty members.

tification in the particular specialty.
Of course, each candidate for a
residency must serve at least one
year on the interne staff of an
approved hospital. It is generally
estimated that about one-third of
the graduates each year seek resi
dency appointments, which will
qualify them for certification.
In 1948 there were 5,543 medical
graduates in the United States. Ac
cordingly. about 1,850 will apply for
special training and certification as
specialists. The percentage of Jew
ish graduates, who desire to be
come specialists, is probably greater
than in the non-Jewish groups, be
cause Jewish doctors, as a rule, set
tle in large cities, not so much of
choice but because it is difficult for
them to acquire a practice in small
cr rural communities.
Contrary to the general impres
sion. Christians are extremely clan
nish in their choice of physicians.
Even in the large cities, with but
few exceptions, Jewish specialists
of high rank seldom acquire a large
percentage of gentile patients,
while gentile physicians of equal
rank very often have a large Jewish
following. As a matter of fact, in
some of the metropolitan areas
many of the prominent gentile con
sultants have a large Jewish clien
tele, while the reverse is hardly
ever true, no matter what promi
nence the Jewish specialists may
attain.
Of the 650 Jewish graduates in
medicine, about 250 will seek to
qualify themselves as specialists
each year. Obviously, the impor
tant Jewish hospitals throughout
the country are unable to supply
the demand for residencies in all
the special branches of medicine.
However, it must be stated that
about eighteen of the leading Jew
ish hospitals in the country have
done an excellent job in reorganiz
ing their medical and surgical ser
vices and establishing approved
residencies in many branches of
medicine.
Still, there is a lack of approved
lesideneies in many Jewish hos
pitals, particularly in the highly
specialized deparmtents, such as
opthalmology, thoracic surgery,
neurological surgery, and many
others. The Jewish graduates must
therefore seek residencies in non-
Jewish hospitals and, with the ex
ception of municipal hospitals, they
hnd it difficult to obtain residencies
in non-Jewish voluntary hospitals.
It seems to me that the respon-
