Selection from Our Bible
What is man, that Thou art mindful of him, and the son of
man that Thou thinkest of him?
Yet Thou hast made him but little lower than the angels, and
hast crowned him with glory and honour.

Heart of the Separation Problem
Guest Editorial by Dr. Julius S. Fisher
RABBI, BEAUFORT, S. C.
The Cardinal Spellman—Mrs. Roosevelt controversy
touched on a problem, but, in my opinion, not upon the
heart of it.
No one wants—I speak of sober-minded people—to have
a Church-dominated state, or a State-dominated church
or congregation. State and religious organizations must
be separated. The clock cannot be set back.
Bust must matters religious be left to their fate, de
prived of any measure of legal protection, reduced to the
status of playthings at the will and whim of anyone who
cares to toy around with them?
This is the way in which Separation has been inter
preted and practized for the last century.
Let us be impartial and we will acknowledge that the
very term of Separation has some connotation, some
slight, yet clear-cut, undertone of antagonism in it. As
though it were a defense against some dark menace . . .
Justified as such attitude might have—or might not
have-been in the past, it is not warranted today.
All depends on what values, if any, religion has to offer
to our age and society—whether this age and society has
succeeded in finding ways and methods others than re
ligious to impress upon the growing and grown up gen
eration the principles of good and evil, moral purity and
impurity together with the imperatives of the equality of
men, of humaneness, of charity; the very foundations of
our not only ethical and cultural, but, to be sure, of our
social and legal world. In one word, is religion still one of
our basic institutions?
By Mrs. Roosevelts letter it is. She refers to religion as
to “spiritual leadership” contrasting it with the govern
ments’ “temporary leadership.” Moreover she writes
“The real religious teaching of any child must be done
by his own church”, thus entrusting the ethical training
and character-molding of the tender—aged to the forma
tive influerice of religious teachers.
On the basis of these tremendous facts the following
points should deserve consideration ;
Question; Is the function of religious bodies more im
portant from the social and national point of view, than
f. i. that of the “Society of Six-Footers”? Answer: Yes.
Q. Do they have more legal protection? A. No. Q. Can any
member of a religious organization disaffiliate himself by
simply stating his intention in a letter? A. Yes. Q. Even
in a case, where he was instrumental (voted at meetings)
in the assumption by the congregation of heavy liabilities
(erection of buildings, engagement of a minister)? A. Yes
Q. Is it possible that due to the secession of a group, even
of a small group, of members the religious organization is
bound to collapse? A. Yes. Q. And the minister lands on
the street? A- Yes. Q. Is a minister economically more
protected by the law than an errand boy. A. No. Q. And
as far as the scholastic prerequisites at e concerned? A.No.
Q. Can anybody from the street assume the title, rights
and functions of a minister? A. Yes. Q. Even a six-year-
old boy? A. Yes! Q. Has such a thing ever occured? A. Just
a few weeks ago. A six-year-old boy solemnized a wed
ding under the indifferent eyes of the authorities. The
instances could be multiplied.
Here is the heart of the problem!
Labor unions’ rights are legally protected, although
Labor and State are separated. Professions’ rights, as far
as the scholastic training is concerned, are strictly cir
cumscribed and enforced, although Professions and
State are separated. “Spiritual leadership" and “Spiritual
leaders” are legal outcasts.
Here is the heart of the problem: the chaos in matters
religious engulfing the country from coast to coast; the
economic insecurity of religious bodies and teachers; the
splitting, the atomization of these organizations; the
humiliating position of many a minister and as a result,
the reluctance of self-respecting, gifted youth to enter
ministry; the mob of self-styled, unqualified ministers
down to the six-year-old “priest” (who according to Mrs.
Roosevelt’s letter should accord religious and ethical
training to the young generation), this wild nightmare of
the situation . . . and all this at a juncture when our en
tire structure of ethical, cultural and religious values is
facing the greatest threat in the course qf history at the
hand of materialistic barbarism.
Let that inveterate, senseless antagonism against re
ligious organization^ cease to be! let “spiritual leader
ship" be granted legal care and protection. As much as it
desemes. Not more and not less.
Register Your Child in A Jewish School
JEWISH EDUCATION?
It’s as simple as the Aleph, Bet. Without
Jewish education, your children will lose
their rich inheritance of Judaism. Your
children’s happiness depends to a large
degree upon the way they meet the Jewish
aspects of their lives.
Or will it be a well-spring of happiness
and enrichment? The answer depends up
on you. Will you prepare them to enter
upon their rich heritage or will you disin
herit them? You want them to grow up
into useful citizens; good wholesome hu
man beings. Then prepare them by regis
tering them in our Jewish school. What
will this education mean to them and to
you? It will mean that you will keep your
children closer to you. That they will share
with you the Jewish life of your family.
That they will be instilled with a sense of
continuity of Judaism. That they will de
velop an appreciation of their life as Jews,
of Jewish ideals and Jewish tradition. And
most of all, it will give them a sense of
“belonging”, a sense of security in the
world about them. All of that will spell
happiness. Happiness for them. Happiness
for you. They will grow up well-rounded,
integrated personalities.■
SHOULD THEY GO?
The answer is now! Each year is important
in the Jewish education of your children.
Even as with secular education, Jewish
education begins with the pre-school child.
It continues with a full elementary school
course. A minimum of six years is required
to give your children a sound elementary
Jewish education. It should be followed by
four years of secondary school training.
Education for life never ceases. Jewish ed
ucation is education for better Jewish liv
ing. With a sound elementary training,
your children will want to continue their
studies in their adult years.
{dill* ARE CHILDREN, TOO!
It is an out-dated idea—this, of educating
our sons and not our daughters. We today
provide our daughters with secular educa
tion to the same degree that we do our
sons. It is just as important to do that with
Jewish education.
For Jewish life centers in the home. It is
the woman who is the home builder. How
will she be able to create a Jewish home if
she is not prepared?
Give your children Their Heritage!
REGISTER THEM TODAY.

POLITICAL NOTES
Jewish Agency leaders in the
United States are concerned
over the stubborn demands of
the State Department that Is
rael must revise its present
frontiers . . . They consider
the situation so serious that
they Irove called upon Ameri
can non-Zionist groups for
political aid . . .
Two meetings have recently
taken place between Jewish
Agency members and leaders
of the American Jewish Com
mittee and other organizations
at which the present policy of
the State Department was dis
cussed . . .
Some Zionist leaders claim
that while the U. S. is officially
participating in'the attempt at
Lausanne to bring about an
Arab-Israeli peace, the State
Department has, at the same
time, hinted to Arab statesmen
not to reach a peace settlement
in a hurry . . .
And these Zionist leaders
openly ask the question: “Does
the American Government con
template weakening the Jewish
State?” . . . The real attitude
of the U. S. Government will,
of' course, be seen from the
tactics which the U. S. delega
tion adopts at the United Na
tions General Assembly which
opens this month . . .
But, for the time being, it is
evident that the State Depart
ment wants three major things:
that Jerusalem be internation
alized; that Israel give up
either a part of the Negev or a
part of Galilee; that Israel ad
mit more than 100,000 Arab
refugees . . . None of the three
requests is acceptable to the
Jewish state . . .
