JEWISH EDUCATION
Vital
Our Community may sometimes appear not to give sufficient em
phasis to Jewish education because of its necessary interest in social
service, community organization, public relations and Welfare Fund
campaigns. Circumstances and need compel attention to Jews rather
than Judaism. But we have re-learned since 1933 what we really knew
before (but some of us forgot) that we Jews are stronger against at
tack, moral and physical, when we know our history, both religious
and secular. We are proud and strong when we realize the significance
of that Jewish history, and appreciate the essential contribution it has
made to world civilization.
The foundation stones of our democracy—the inalienable right of
freedom and respect for the dignity of the individual—these stem from
from the ancient Jewish teachings. These concepts, as well and the
tablets of the law and the pronouncements of the prophets, are an in
tegral part of our Jewish heritage .They need to be a part of our Jew
ish education, that these experiences of the past may be made a living
part of the present.
And it is these needs that Bureau of Jewish Education here and in
other communities are beginning to serve with varying degrees of
success. With every passing year these Bureaus will play an increas
ingly vital part in Jewish life.
PHILIP SHULHAFER, PRESIDENT
ATLANTA JEWISH COMMUNITY COUNCIL
The Afternoon School
for Adequate Jewish Education
A recent survey discloses that approximately 88% of the Jewish
children of grammar and high school age attend Sunday school
and that approximately 22% attend afternoon schools. The aver
age student who attends Sunday school receives approximately
seventy-hour hours of instruction and learning for a period of one
year, which would mean just about nine working days of eight
hours a day.
Although the Bureau has endeavored to increase the attendance
in afternoon schools for the past three years, the increase has been
very slight.
It is the desire of the Bureau to see as many girls and boys in
the afternoon schools as may be possible. As Chairman of the Bu
reau, I would like to emphasize, upon all parents the importance
of making a greater effort this year to enroll their children in an
afternoon school.
