Education Bureau Tells Program
Of Season’s Adult Institutes
The Adult Jewish Institutes of
Atlanta are now offering a pro
gram of adult studies for the year
1949-1950. The Institutes are
sponsored by the Adult Jewish
Organizations of Atlanta in coop
eration with the Atlanta Bureau
of Jewish Education and the At
lanta Jewish Community Center.
The Institutes this year are in
two semesters: the first from Nov.
15, ’49 to Jan. 31, '50; the second,
j from Feb. 7 through April 11.
; Each semester consists of ten
| sessions.
The first semester of the Insti
tutes offers two courses: “The
Prophets”, an analysis of the writ
ings of the earlier and later
Prophets with emphasis on back
ground and impact on Jewish
thought; and “Creative Forces in
American Jewish Life”, a discus
sion of the realistic possibilities in
America of the Synagogue, Jew
ish Education, the Jewish Home,
the Jewish Center, American
Zionism, Jewish Public Relations,
the Jewish Press, Jewish Social
Service, Jewish Occupational Pat

For the second semester, the
Institutes offer a choice of “How
to Read and Write Hebrew” or
"How to Read and Write Yiddish",
in ten sessions, to promote partici
pation in Hebrew prayer and to
develop some ability to read the
Yiddish press.
The major course in the second
semester will be “Great Jewish
Personalities”, tracing the de
velopment of Jewish leadership
from Moses Mendelssohn to David
Ben Gurion.
For both semesters the Insti
tutes will offer a complete course
in Modern Hebrew, in 20 sessions,
for those who have some ability
to read Hebrew and have a grasp
of a minimum basic vocabulary.
The Adult Jewish Institutes will
be held in the renovated quarters
of the new Jewish Community
Center on Peachtree Road. The
Rabbi Starts Movement to Eliminate
Sectarianism in U. S. Religious Life
PATERSON, N. J., (JTA)—A
movement to eliminate sectarian
ism in Jewish religious life in
America and to establish a “uni
versal synagogue” was launched
this week by Rabbi Reuben Kauf
man, spiritual leader of a new
Jewish congregation here known
as Congregation Beth-El.
‘The time has come for the re
orientation of Jewish religious
philosophy,” Rabbi Kaufman said.
“The time has come to scrap the
labels ‘Orthodoxy, Conservatism,
Reform, Reconstructionism and
what-have-you’ in Jewish relig
ious life. When the exception of
minor local customs which exist
even today among Jews coming
from various parts of the world,
there are no issues of serious
character that warrant the frag
mentation of Jewish congregation
al lives into sects which only
create confusion and chaos and
| befog the minds of the people as
to what is or is not Jewish prac
tice or Jewish law.”
Rabbi Kaufman, who served as
rabbi of Temple Emanu-El here
for 20 years until his retirement
in 1948, explained that his new
congregation plans to follow the
“traditional Jewish religion, which
goes back before the Reform
movement began in Germany in
1800.”
faculty will consist of Jewish com
munal leaders of Atlanta and out
side lecturers. There are no fees
involved.
Those interested, should phone
the office of the Bureau, LAmar
