Selection from Our Bible
Thus saith the Lord;
"Keep ye justice, and do righteousness, for My salvation is
near to come and My favor to be revealed. Happy is the man
♦hat doeth this, and the son of man that holdeth fast by it, that
keepeth the Sabbath from profaning it; and keepeth his hand
from doing any evil."
Isaiah 56; 1,2.
We Asked for It
Jewish adults profess a great love for education and as
the “people of the book” we should have a higher regard
for religious education and living than any other
religion.
Jewish parents for generations have shouted such a re
gard for education from the housetops and communities
place considerable emphasis on education for the young
folk. All has been empty gesture: Education per se is not
an isolated force, spreading its influence solely within the
four walls of the classroom.
As long as children return from the Jewish atmosphere
of their religious classroom to the sterile—and often hos
tile—shelter known as the modern home, the process fails.
It is a breach of faith with the new generation and the pit
ifully ignorant home of modern families is barren to the
richness which might nurture the cultural development
of the youngster.
It remained for the children themselves to rise and
point the finger at this parental inadequacy. This occur
red a few days ago at a national conference of youth lead
ers, meeting at Narrowsburg under sponsorship of the
Jewish Welfare Board.
A group of delegates, studying the field of Jewish Edu
cation, under an Atlanta youth, Malcolm Minsk, came
forth with this very practical—but startling proposal:
Jewish community centers, Jewish schools and syna
gogues should adopt an intensive program of education
for parents, to help them “make the home environment
a source of dynamic Jewish living and to bring to parents
a knowledge of the problems of children and young adult-
sin living as Jews.”
What greater recognition of the need for parent educa
tion than from the children themselves? What better in
dication of the ignorance in which recent generations of
Jewish parents are steeped?
But recriminations aside, what better challenge and
testimony to inspire the parents to begin the remedial
process?
Atlanta is fortunate in already having an adult institute
underway through which the deficiency can in part be
rectified. It is only to ba hoped, as sincere answer to the
children, that these facilities will be more widely utilized
than in the past. And that more such facilities will be
made available here and in those communities where
none exists today.
No Miracle
Guest Editorial
Grown men and women are not often seen weeping
over old pieces of paper. Yet, this was a familiar spectacle
on the Fredom Train, which started its nationwide tour
two years ago today, on the 10th anniversary of the adop
tion of the United States Constitution.
Among the hallowed documents that touched the
emotions of millions, the major attractions were the Con
stitutions and the Declaration of Independence. The in
spiring phrases of the latter have endeared it to the hearts
hearts of free men everywhere. But, without the sober
clauses of the Constitution, the “unalienable rights” pro
claimed by the Declaration would never become worka
day realities. *
The Founding Fathers scrapped all legal precedent and
baaed the Constitution on what was then a revolutionary
tkenry—that the purpose of government is not to domi
nate and manipulate the people, but to protect their lib
erty and enhance their well-being.
ht providing for popular elections; the Constitution en
ables tfhe voters to govern their own destinies. In calling
for a strong legislature, it gives sovereignty not to any
ruler, but to the people themselves. In setting up a system
of checks and balances, it prevents abuse at the hands of
any group.
No law has ever been more respected. That is because
no law has shown greater deference to the rights of the in
dividual. The Constitution protects all the people, rich
and poor, farmer and factory hand—Americans of every
religion and national origin.
Those unacquainted with this country must think it
nothing short of a miracle that a structure of government
designed for a small agricultural nation of about four mil
lion people remains the basic framework of the world’s

WASHINGTON.
Jews behind the Iron Cur
tain are complaining about the
American “Jewish reactionary
press" in the wake of reports
that Rumanian Jews have been
sealed in railway freight cars
and shipped to Siberia.
Angry charges of deliberate
distortion are hurled against
the Jewish press in this coun
try by broadcasts in Yiddish
from Warsaw. These broad
casts purport to represent the
Jewish people of Poland.
Warsaw radio reports heard
in Washington allege that the
Jewish Committee in Cracow
has adopted a resolution pro
testing “against the campaign
of slander carried out by the
Jewish reactionaries in the
West against the countries of
the People’s Democracy" (So
viet satellites).
One report described a Jew
ish protest meeting at Lodz at
which the “Jewish common
people” protested the anti
communist expressions of
American Jewish newspapers.
At this meeting a resolution of
protest was allegedly adopted.
It was quoted, in Yiddish, over
the Warsaw radio as follows:
“We, the Jewish workers of
Lodz, express our protest
against the wild campaign of
slander which has been un
leased by the Jewish reaction
ary press abroad against the
People’s Democratic Poland
and against the Jewish work
ing population of the country.
“The fabricated stories about
alleged anti-Semitic excesses
are aimed at the weakening of
the sympathy of the broad
masses of the world for the
Jewish settlement in Poland
and for the Democratic Peo
ple’s Poland. With their cam
paign they are helping the im
perialist powers to prepare
another world massacre.”
Another report, in Yiddish,
says: ‘The members of a Jew
ish cooperative in Wroclaw
have passed a resolution pro
testing the alleged rumors of
pogroms and discrimination
against Jews in Poland which
are being spread by the react
ionary press abroad. These ru
mors have nothing in common
with the reality of the stabili
zed Jewish life in Poland."
The Warsaw radio, however,
neglected to mention the testi
mony of Polish Jews in Dis
placed Persons camps in the
American zone of Germany.
A number of American Jews
who served with the Israel
Army have expressed violent
opposition to the reported plans
of a super-Orthodox Jewish
sect to emigrate to the United
States from Israel. The sect,
known as the Netura Karta, is
anti-Zionist and has voiced
hopes of moving to the United
States because they believe Is
rael does not offer them enough
religious freedom.
Sources close to the State
Department considered the re
port with much amusement.
One diplomatic correspondent
observed that the Netura Karta
may be the first “Pilgrims" to
leave Israel.
An ex-G. I. who has returned

to the United States after com
bat service with the Israel
Army said this week that mem
bers of the ultra-Orthodox sect
ridiculed American Jews who
aided Israel repel the Arab in
vader. He said the sect has not
been deprived of its religious
freedom but has consistently
attempted to deprive others of
their freedom.
An incident he witnessed was
the actual stoning of an Israel
military ambulance which
passed a synagogue on Satur
day. (Other reports have told
of their smashing windows and
throwing stench bombs into
commercial places open on the
Sabbath and stoning volunteer
volunteer firemen who were
risking their lives to extinguish
a synagogue fire on the Sab
bath.)
Rabbi Amram Blau, leader
of 'the Netura Karta, was
quoted recently as saying his
sect would prefer to live under
Arab jurisdiction but, as an al
ternative, would emigrate to
the United States. The sect is
anti-Zionist because they be
lieve that only the Messiah
should bring about the rebirth
of Israel.

QUESTION: Why Is it cus
tomary for those present at the
burial rites to cover the grave
with earth?
ANSWER: This is the last
honor to be performed and it
resembles the loving affection
with which a mother draws the
covers over her sleeping child.
It indicates that even in death
men should help and comfort
each other. Some feel that it
adds to the forgiveness which
the deceased seeks in the eyes
Heavenly tribunal. Others in
dicate that it is a symbol of the
fact that all will eventually
follow the path to the grave
and that the deceased is only a
step ahead.
QUESTION: What does the
term “Parve" mean?
ANSWER: Since it is forbid
den to mix meat and dairy
foods or utensils, most foods
or utensils are known as either
“Milchig”, which means dairy,
or “Fleishig,” which means
“meat.” New utensils which
have not yet been used for
either, or foods which are veg
etables and therefore not cate
gorized as either meat or dairy
foods, are called “Parve," or

The Constitution has weathered changing times because
its fundamental principle apply to a free society in any
era. By constantly bringing daily practices into line with
basic tenets, Americans prove that they are just as de
voted to the rights of man as were their forefathers in
1787. In fact, we are now witnessing a nation-wide move
ment to close certain gaps between our ideals and our
patterns of conduct. Legislation for fair employment prac
tices and to eliminate segregation in housing and educa
tion is gathering momentum all over the country today.
Jim Crow is on the way out of the Army and Navy. Pro
gress is being made in the drive to eliminate the poll tax.
Such advances are not brought about by miracles. They
result from the desire of the American people to continue
doing things the American way.
