liadussuli Membership Drive
Reported in Full Swing
Culminating a week of intensive
work on a drive for new member
ship, the Atlanta Chapter of Ha
dassah will hold a Report Dessert
Luncheon at the Mayfair Club on
Tuesday, Sept 20, 1 p. m. That
date has been designated as “Ha
dassah Day," every effort is be
ing made to climax the campaign
in a large public demonstration at
the luncheon.
Some one hundred Hadassah
workers led by Mrs. Phillip
Schwartz, new membership chair
man, and Mrs. George Chait, Ha
dassah Day chairman, are en
gaged in fulfilling the aim of
“every Jewish woman a member
of Hadassah." Reports already
coming in indicate a full and en-.
thuslastic response to the drive.
With the increased need of ser
vices to handle the newcomers in
Israel and the urgency for imme
diate medical care, all facilities
are being taxed to the greatest
limit. New members will and can
help to reach this goal by joining
at once. Atlanta women who have
not yet been contacted for mem
bership can do their bit by com
municating with the membership
committee through Mrs. George
Chait at HEmlock 1290 or Mrs.
Phillip Schwartz at HEmlock
5234.
Community Calendar
The COMMUNITY CALENDAR, a regular feature of The
Southern Israelite, will be resumed next week. Organizations de
siring listing in the COMMUNITY CALENDAR should send their
material to The Southern Israelite as far in advance of the event
as possible.
Apartments Radiy Needed for
Atlanta’s Newest DP-Comers
Apartments are sorely needed
| for Atlanta’s newest displaced
persons arrivals.
Several families arriving re
cently have had to be crowded
temporarily into single furnished
rooms, without the privacy which
is so essential tq the first step to
wards rehabilitation.
Like other communities, Atlanta
I has pledged to resettle several
! family units until the end of this
J year. The Council of Jewish Wo-
I men Housing Committee has taken
j over the job of providing housing
for the newcomers.
Mrs. Arthur Sanders, the com
mittee chairman; pointed out
“these new arrivals have lived in
crowded quarters of DP camps

since the end of the war. And
when they come to Atlanta they
again find themselves in crowded
circumstances. It is quite obvious
thut adequate and proper housing
must be secured for them and that
a friendly atmosphere at home
will do wonders in establishing
them as useful members of the
community.
“The Housing committee directs
an urgent appeal to the Atlanta
Jewish -community for help in se
curing apartments to house fam
ilies with and without children.
These families are under the care
of the Atlanta Federation of Jew
ish Social Service which guaran
tees the rent until the families be
come self-supporting.”
Anyone having such rental units
or know of some should contact
Mrs. Sanders at VE. 4525.

How Smiley
Bowled 'Em Over
Dropped into the bowling alleys
the other night and there was little
Smiley Roberts, who’s built like a
bird, showing the big fellows how
to do it. He rolled an average of 194
for 5 games. That’s bowling!
Later on, over a friendly glass
of beer at Andy’s Garden Tavern,
I asked Smiley how he did it.
“Practice, practice, and then some
more practice," he said, “and I fol
low a regular set of training rules
so I’ll keep in good.shape."
Then Andy chimes in. "To be
really good at anything you've got

to follow the rules. Take running
this tavern. We tavern owners and
the Brewing industry have a Self-
Regulatibn program we follow to
see that places getting beer and ale
are run right. When you follow the
rules—you’ll stay out ahead of the
other fellow."

and tavern rules—and they both
