Yes, Rosh Hashanah was a day
of much praying, much talking,
much mingling, music and shofar
blowing and when we got home
we dipped some apples in honey,
symbolic of a sweet year and
wished one another that they be
"written” down for a happy new
year — but the term “written”
used to trouble me.
How could they be writing up in
the skies on Rosh Hashanah! Is
is not forbidden to "write” on that

that the Law was as applicable on
Heaven as on earth? Did not the
Chassidim teach that God, too, put

But then there was the de luxe

even the mental doubts.

Several days ago I listened with
keen interest to a conversation be
tween two Jews here concerning
the Peron regime in Argentina and
its attitude toward the Jews. One
of them was pro-Peron while the
other did not agree with the policy
of the pro-Peron Jewish group,
“Organizacion Israelita Argentina.”
Following is a summation of the
conversation between A (pro-Pe
ron) and B.
A: You cannot deny that under
Peron the anti-Semitic press dis
appeared almost completely and
that during the past 18 months we
have had only a few anti-Semitic
incidents in Argentina. Also, no ob
stacles have been put in the way
of the development of Jewish cul
tural and religious, as well as Zion
ist, progress.
B: That is true. I don’t deny
that at present we are living in
peace and that many ugly things
tolerated by former governments
have been suppressed. But who
knows what the near future may
bring us? After all, Mussolini, too,
was against anti-Semitism until
one day he adopted the Nazi anti-
Semitic laws. Only a liberal democ
racy can provide a guaranty against
an official anti-Semitic policy.
A: Peron is more intelligent
than Mussolini. Besides, he can see
what a great mistake it was for
Mussolini to fall under the in
fluence of Hitlerite Germany. As
far as liberal democracy is con
cerned, the Foreign Secretary of
the liberal and democratic, and
even Socialist, government of Brit
ain is an anti-Semite, while the
Home Secretary of Britain
