Prayer for Rosh Hashanah
by EVELYN EPSTEIN
O Lord, our God, what can we pray for this year?
Thou well knowest our needs; we’re Thy children dear.
So full have been Thy blessings to us the year past,
The gift of Israel, with honor and power, last.
Thou has been gathering Thy pitiful remnant.
The people of Thy covenant, once abundant.
Thou’rt bringing them to the Holy Land, their home,
With hope in their hearts that they’ll not again roam.
O God. our Shepherd:
Our earnest thanks and praises accept;
Thine old promise to us Thou has kept.
Our King, we pray for Thy continued mercy;
Israel cannot have health and peace without Thee.
Its governing body and helpers do Thou guide,
And the humble needs of thousands do Thou provide.
Pour Thy blessing upon every farm in the land;
May their yields be affluent as the seashore sand.
May all its people spiritually grow
And have wisdom to overcome every foe.
Eternal our God:
May the people of Israel be strong
And dominate all evil and wrong.
Help Thy people out of Israel, O Lord, too,
In the lands of freedom, show them what to do.
May we all unite now than ever before
And Thy glorious name more than ever adore.
May we have fuller grasp of our mission ahead —
May Thy commandments and laws be our daily bread.
May we keep in mind our duties to our young,
And sing them sweet Psalms our grandfathers had sung.
Almighty Father:
Thou knowest the hardships on our hands;
Remove the oppression that still stands.
And help us all resolve for our daily life.
To promote more goodness and love and end strife.
May we give more cheer and hope to all who’re oppressed,
More sympathy and aid to the poor and distressed.
In our home, work, our business and everywhere.
May all our relations be more than only fair;
hi business, may justice reign, not to fear loss,
To remember where right rules money is dross.
O All-righteous God:
May we all evil temptation still
By doing only Thy holy will.
All this, dear Creator, is to Thee our prayer.
All the rest we leave to Thy bounteous care,
For of Thy love and kindness we’re well aware.

Two Contemporary Movies
The current sensation among Jews in New York is the film “Sword
in the Desert”. . . It is the first motion picture produced by Hollywood
on the struggle between the British administration and the Jewish under
ground movement in Palestine which preceded the establishment of
Israel. . . Although there are no Jewish actors in the cast, the picture
is quite convincingly Jewish. . . The heroes of the Jewish underground
and their activities are presented very vividly and keep the audience
in a constant state of excitement. . . The scenes, although not filmed
in Palestine, also have an air of authenticity since they were taken in
California which is amazingly similar to the citrus-growing areas of
Palestine. . . The producers — Universal-International Pictures — have
tried not to make a “Jewish film” of their production, but an impartial
film of general interest. . . They, therefore, picture the British with a
certain degree of leniency.. . The dramatic story of how the Jews suc
ceed in their fight against the British is presented stirringly and is emo
tionally very satisfying. .. It is a monument to the Haganah, Irgun and
all the Jewish groups in Palestine who brought about the liberation of
Israel. . . However, some Jews may question the wisdom of the pro
ducers in choosing a Christmas Eve party of the British military tn
Palestine as a scene for a fierce attack by the Jewish underground. . .
The scenic effect would have been just as good if a gathering of Britsih
soldiers was attacked at any other time than while singing Christmas
carols. . . The evening chosen by the producers for the attack does not
exactly contribute to the improvement of inter-religious relations in
this country. . . On the whole, however, the film is excellent. . .
