But perhaps the most spectacular
episode in the exodus and home
coming of 5709, was the J.D.C.’s
“Operation Magic Carpet” by
which more than 7,000 Jews were
literally transferred from the Dark
Ages to the 20th Century, as J.D.C.
planes flew them from the primi
tive Moslem world to Israel. This
7,000 included 5,200 Yemenites who
had fled from terror and misery in
their native kingdoms to the Brit
ish Protectorate of Aden, making
the 20 mile journey on foot, and
1,800 Aden Jews. The Yemenites,
on arriving at Aden City, a Red Sea
port, were housed in squalid Hashid
Camp. Destitute, they were kept
alive by J.D.C. assistance and by
their dream of reaching Israel.
Then one day the planes came.
Eighty round trips, each flight 1,600
miles long, turned their dreams
into solid reality.
And as this is being written, an
other “‘Operation Magic Carpet” is
underway, and J.D.C. is flying out
a new group of several thousand
Yemenite Jews from Aden, a hun
dred to a plane.
Meanwhile, out of the North
African lands of Morocco, Tunisia
and Libya, in 5709, several thou
sand Jews fled from continuous
misery and terror to a new life in
the Promised Land. From Mar
seille, Bari and Tripoli, J.D.C.
helped these Jews to reach Haifa.
Last Rosh Hashanah, also, there
were some 30,000 Jews in Bulgaria.
Almost every month of 5709 saw
ships sail from Bulgaria’s Black Sea
ports to Haifa. The exodus from
this country was so complete that
in early summer, the J.D.C. was
able to write ‘“finis” to its program
in that country.
In 5709, also, a decade of futile
waiting ended for several thousand
Jews in Shanghai, where Jewish
refugees from that city were moved
out of the Chinese civil war zone
to safety in Israel, Canada, the
United States and other lands.
From Rangoon in Burma, and
Bahrein, an island in the Persian
gulf, the J.D.C. flew Jews to Israel.
From Asmara and from Djibouti,
on Africa’s east coast, J.D.C. aid
helped Jews reach Israel. From al
most every corner of Europe, in
deed of the world J.D.C. aid helped
bring newcomers to Israel.
All these heartening events could
not have happened but for the
great generosity of the American
Jewish community which provided
the J.D.C., through the United Jew
ish Appeal, with the funds for this
greatest Jewish migration in mod
ern days.
The J.D.C,, in 5709 as the instru
ment of the American Jewish com
munity, preserved life and hope for
Jews overseas. It financed nearly
all transportation costs to Israel
and provided immigration assis
tance, food, clothing, maintenance
en route and traveling allowances
to men, women and children going
to the United States, Canada, South
America and other lands.
But the year of destiny — the
year that ended homelessness for
230,000 Jews overseas — was also
a year of decisive achievement for
those remaining in their native
lands. Focal point in the wide
spread gains of 5709 was economic
recovery. Today some 95,000 Jew
ish men and women who were
fully dependent on the J.D.C. a
year ago have been aided to a meas
ure of, or full, self-sufficiency.
