Jewish Doctor;
Reverses Stand
MUNICH, (JTA)—By a* vote of
29 to 15 the city council of Offen
bach this deek reversed its pre
vious decision and elected Dr. Her
bert Lewin, a Jewish physician,
head of the women’s clinic at the
municipal hospital. Dr. Lewin’s
election marks the end of a con-
troversey which began in Sep
tember when the municipal auth
orities cancelled his appointment
because he was a Jew.
As a result Offenbach’s deputy
mayor was suspended by the City
Council. United States Military
Government officials ordered an
investigation. It was reported that
the ousted official had expressed
the feeling that Lewin “might re
sent treating non-Jews” because
Jews had been mistreated under
Nazi rule.

Regional United Synagogue
Meets in Charleston Nov. 27

CHARLESTON—The Southeast
Region, United Synagogue of
America, will hold its second an
nual conference on Jewish educa
tion at Synagogue Emanuel in
Charleston on Sunday, Nov. 27.
Macey Kronsberg, of Charles
ton, president, has appointed Na
than Goldberg of this city to serve
as conference chairman.
Dr. Israel M. Goldman, rabbi of
Chizuk Amuno, Baltimore direc
tor of the National Academy for
Adult Jewish Studies and former
national president of the Rabbi
nical Assembly of America, will
be the principal speaker.
In addition, Dr. Goldman will
also lead the Seminar on “A Pro
gram of Adult Education for the
Consevative Synagogue.”

interests of the entire synagogue

Johannesburg Mayor
JOHANNESBURG, (JTA) —
Jack Mincer, a Jewish civic and
communal leader, has been named
the new mayor of Johannesburg
for the next year. Mr. Mincer was
vice-mayor of the city this year.
His election, by the municipal
council, was unanimous.
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — The
Government of Israel now has
complete details on the anti-Jew-
ish reign of terror in Iraq, includ
ing the names of 250 Jews arrested
in Bagdad since Yom Kippur. Is
rael sources in Washington re
ceived this information in a report
indicating unabated atrocities in
Iraq.
Three Bagdad policemen—Atta
el Masri, Muhammed el Hassen,
and Fadel Ahmad—have received
promotions for being particularly
brutal to Jewish prisoners, it was
reported. The report stated that
many Jews have been flogged and
have had their finger nails ex
tracted by medival torture meth
ods.

B’nai B’rith
To UNESCO
NEW YORK, (JTA)—Election
of B’nai B’rith to the U. S. com
mission of the UNESCO was an
nounced this week by Frank Gold
man, president of B’nai B’rith. The
commission serves as an advisory
body to the State Department. Mr
Goldman also announces the ap
pointment of Dr. William Rosen-
blum, of New York, as B’nai
B’rith’s representative on the com
mission.
JDC Snatches
30,000 from
Aden by Air
NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
transfer by plane of 29,000 Jews
from Aden to Israel in “one of the
most dramatic mass immigration
movement of all time,” was made
known this week by the Joint Dis
tribution Committee.
Nearly 20,000 of the immigrants*
plainly Yemenite Jews, were
flown to the Jewish state in Sep
tember and October, and the op
eration, which has had the full
cooperation of the Government of
Israel and the Jewisn Agency, is
continuing at the present time.
Several thousand Yemenite Jews
are still awaiting air passage in a
large reception camp near the city
of Aden.
Simultaneous announcement of
the airborne movement was made
here by Edward M. M. Warburg,
J. D. C. chairmen, and in Paris by
Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, chairman
of J. D. C.’s European executive
council and director of its overseas
relief, resettlement and recon
struction operations in 23 coun
tries. The air evacuation from
Aden has already cost m^re than
$2,000,000, it was disclosed.
Israeli and Kefauver to Talk at Z.O.A.
Conference in Atlanta Nov. 19-21
Itzak Kubowitzki, vice president of the General Zionist party in Is
rael and former president of the Belgian Zionist Federation, will bring
greetings to the delegates and visitors from all over the Southeast, who
will gather in Atlanta over the
week-end of Nov. 19 to 21 for the
twelfth Annual Conference of the
Z. O. A. Region.
The Conference will hear ad
dresses by prominent American
leaders, who will headline its pro
gram. It will be honored by the
presence of Daniel Frisch, Presi
dent of the Z. O. A., who is sched
uled to deliver the principal
speech at the banquet tendered
him at the Mayfair Club on Sun
day, Nov. 20 at 7 p. m. A luncheon
highlighting the need for contin
ued effectiveness in public rela
tions, will take place at the Pro
gressive Club at 1:00 p. m. on the
same day, and will feature a talk
by Senator Estes Kefauver of
Tennessee, hard-hitting liberal
and champion of a constructive
pro-Israel policy in the halls of
Congress.
The three-day conclave will
open at the A. A. Educational Cen
ter on Saturday evening, Nov. 19,
at 8:30 p. m. It will begin with a
Havdalah service by Brandeis
graduates led by Rabbi Joseph
Cohen. Conference Chairman Dr.
Alfred A. Weinstein and his Co-

extend greetings to the out-of-
town visitors. This will be follow
ed by the Annual Message of the
