National Groups Rap Council for Judaism
For Unfounded Charges in Public Press
NEW YORK, (JTA)—A strong loyality’, the American Council aloof from their efforts. Nor does
condemnation of the American
Council for Judaism for its “un
founded charges and innuendoes
casting doubts on the loyalty of
American Jews" was issued this
week by the National Community
Relations Advisory Council, coor
dinating body for the American
Jewish Committee, American
Jewish Congress, AntiDefamation
League on B’nai B’rith, Jewish
Labor Committee, Jewish War
Veterans of the United States,
Union of American Hebrew Con
gregations, and 27 local Jewish
community councils throughout
the country.
“The small but highly vocal
groups of Jewish individuals
known as the American Coun
cil for Judaism has been respon
sible for the publication in the
nation's press of reiterated state
ments casting doubts on the loy
alty of American Jews who have
demonstrated their sympathies
with Israel,” the N. C. R. A. C.
said, ‘"fhese statements constitute
thinly veiled slurs on the alle
giance of substantially the whole
American Jewish community. The
overwhelming majority of Amer
ican Jews, Zionist and non-Zionist
alike, recognizing their obligaton
to help Israel in the huge task of
resettling and absorbing hundreds
of thousands of homeless Jews,
and conscious of their deep re
ligious and cultural affinity with
the Jews of Israel, are aiding in
the upbuilding of that land.
“In raising the bogey of ‘dual
for Judaism ignores the fact that
the American way of life recog
nizes the right of all citizens to
work for such causes, consistent
with the welfare and security of
the United States, as engage their
sympathies. Aid to Israel is such
a cause. In the eyes of our gov
ernment, Israel is—as a high offi
cial recently expressed it—an out
post of democracy in the Middle
East.”
Our fellow citizens have joined
American Jews in applauding the
accomplishments and encouraging
the efforts of the state of Is
rael. Indeed, leaving aside the
professional anti-Semites who
seize upon any pretext for fulmi
nating against Jews, it is only in
the minds on the numerically in
significant membership of the
American Council for Judaism,
and of the" few individuals who
have succumbed to the Council’s
propaganda, that the specter of
‘dual loyalty’ has arisen.
“No one questions the right of
the Council for Judaism, however,
insignificant its size, to disagree
with the great majority of its fel
low citizens and to hold itself
Libel Suit Against
A D L Dismissed
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — Dis
trict Court Judge Matthew Mc-
Quire this week dismissed a libel
suit brought against the B’nai
B’rith Anti-Defamation League by
Robert H. Williams, an anti-Sem
itic pamphleteer. Williams is
author of “The Anti-Defamation
League and Its Use in the World
Communist Offensive.”
Williams charged that the A.D.
L. libeled him in a book that de
scribed him as expressing “un
friendly sentiments” in his publi
cation. In refusing to accept this
complaint, the court stated that
the Supreme Court has sanctioned
an organization’s defense of itself,
provided there is no malice.
any one question its right to seek
to persuade others to its point of
view. But no extension of the
principle of freedom of speech or
association can any defense be
made of the Council’s casting of
baseless slurs upon the American
ism of its fellow Jews. In this it
violates every principle of truth
and decency.
“The national and local Jewish
organizations which Join in the
present statement number among
their affiliates the overwhelming
majority of American Jews. These
organizations vigorously condemn
the American Council for Juda
ism for its unfounded charges and
innuendoes and declare them to
be gross libels upon American
Jewry.”
In a statement accompanying
the denunciation, Irving Kane
chairman of the N.C.R.A.C., said
that it was issued “after the Coun
cil for Judaism over a period of
several months had persistently
rejected proferred opportunities
to discuss the harmful effects of
its propaganda with the N.C.R.A.
C.”
Baron Rothschild Warns
Of Hate Revivalin Europe
LONDON, (JTA)—The need to
“prepare for an emergency” in
view of the revival of anti-Semi
tic forces in Europe was stressed
here this week by Baron Guy De
Rothschild, president of the Jewish
Consistory of France, addressing
a meeting here which was called
for the purpose of establishing a
British group to support the Jew
ish Documentation Center in Paris.
The French prosecutor at the
Nuremberg war crimes trials re
lied entirely on material collected
by the Jewish Documentation
Center, Baron Rothschild said. He
pointed out that a systematic cam
paign is now under way to white
wash the Nazis and to present the
horrors they committed — even
the existence of death camps—as
“Jewish atrocity propaganda.”

Salonika Jewry Objects
To “Electoral Ghetto"
ATHENS, (JTA)—Jewish lead
ers here, upon studying more
carefully the text of the nfew
Greek electoral law, established
that the new legislation does not
actually abolish the so-called
“electoral ghetto” for Salonika
Jews but merely reaffirms the ab-
olitian of a clause in that law
which stipulates that the Jews in
Salonika must have separate con
stituencies. The clause was origi
nally repealed in 1935.
The “electoral ghetto” clause,
which provides that the Jews in
Salonika must vote at separate
polling places, still remains under
the new law. Leaders of the Jew
ish community have emphasized
that they will make strong repre
sentations to the government and
will insist that the discriminatory
measure be repealed.
