Hear Report on Israel Problems
ATLANTIC CITY, (JTA) —
“The conflict of cultures in Israel
creates the most serious social
welfare problem in the Jewish
state,” Louis H. Sobel, executive
director of the Jewish Child Care
Association of New York, this
week told approximately 1,000
Jewish social workers attending
the 51st annual meeting of the
National Conference of Jewish
Social Welfare.
Mr. Sobel, who just returned
from a study of Israel’s social
welfare institutions, said: “The
problem resulting from the large
scale migrations—transplantations
—of whole populations, lock, stock
and barrel, brings with it serious
and deep social conflict. For in
stance, the Yemenites—the dead
end kids of the indescribable
ghettos of North Africa—with
their deep differences in lang
uage, customs, dres sand even
racial characteristics, with their
lacks of education, with their
deeply-rooted concepts of family
life and child relationships, pres
ent complex problems.
“In addition,” Mr. Sobel re
ported, “there are almost 100,000
recent immigrants still living in
temporary reception camps. Thus
the problems of social welfare ,j
cannot be compared to those
known in the U. S. In the last
analysis, social welfare will have
to wait for its real development
upon the solution of the primary
economic and political problems
of Israel. Nevertheless, one is
favorably and pleasantily im
pressed to find normalcy in so
many aspects of life in Israel, and

this week from Paris. The dis

reached Warsaw.
The report said Feffer was tried

to violent attacks on the Jewish

such as:

NEW YORK, (JTA)—The

Journal all references to race,

was announced by Edward W.

Stafe Commission Against Dis

The Commission began an in
vestigation of the A.M.A. Journal
last month following the filing of
charges by the American Jewish
Congress that acceptance of such
advertising by the midical asso
ciation’s publication ciolated state
anti - discrimination legislation.
The A.M.A.’s decision came after
a conference between A.M.A. of-
of American Hebrew Congrega
tions on a standardized procedure
for placing rabbis. Speaking at
the annual meeting of the Assem
bly of delegates of the New York
Federation of the U. A. H. C„ Jus

the plan would imfringe on the
autonomy and. independence of
the congregation.
Rabbi Roland Gittelsohn, chair
man of the Joint Placement Com
mission, who presented the plan
to the conference, called it “a
representative and democratic
body made up in equal part of
rabbinical and lay leadership, in
tended to bring order into a situ
ation which lacks both.”
Frederick F. Greenman, presi
dent of the Federation, told the
100 representatives of-the 54 Re
form temples affiliated with the
body, that he expected in the
“not too distant future" to see 100
Reform congregations in New
York. He called for a vigorous
campaign to organize new Reform
synagogues, particularly in new
housing developments.
Chicago Tribune Attacks 3 Leading
Jews As A Secret Gov. In Themselves
Reprinted from Chicago Jewish Sentinal
The Chicago Jewish community was shocked
last week by an obvious attempt on the part of
the Chicago Tribune to inflame the religious
prejudices of its readers by picturing three
leading Jewish figures as being “pro-soviet to a
degree” and of being “ . , , a government in
themselves.”
The article written by Walter Trohan, chief
of the Tribune’s Washington Bureau, appeared
in the Monday, May 29 edition as a lead story
on page one. Referring to Felix Frankfurter,
Henry Morgenthau Jr., and Herbert H. Lehman,
the article stated that, “a person with highest
state department connections identified these
three figures as the secret government of the
United States . . . Frankfurter was pictured as
the most powerful man in the government,
reaching into the White House with his pro
teges.”
Continuing, the story declared that “Lehman
was pictured as a powerful Wall street force . . .
Morgenthau was named by the State Depart
ment authority as the spokesman of the power
ful Zionist groups.”
In an obvious attempt to link the three Jews
with radicalism, the Tribune article pointed up
Frankfurter’s defense of Sacco and Vanzetfi,
“Communists executed for murder” and his
friendship with Alger Hiss “one of Frankfurter’s
bright pupils.”
Morgenthau, national chairman of the United
Jewish Appeal, was castigated by the Tribune
as being “ . . . the author of the policy of a
harsh peace toward Germany, the peace of
revenge known as a Carthaginian peace pro
gram.” The article went on to point out that
“One of the chief architects in carrying out the
harsh peace was Harry Dexter White, born
Weiss,(The Sentinel’s italics), a former assistant
treasury secretary under Morgenthau. White was
identified as a communist spy by Elizabeth
Bentley ...”
“Lehman,” the Tribune added, “has played a
major role in opposing Senator McCarthy (R.
Wis.) in the latter’s effort to expose Commun
ism in the government, particularly in the State
Department.”
The article failed to identify the “high state
supposed to have originated.

NEW YORK, (JTA)—An Orth
odox Jewish woman in New York
has won an appeal from a ruling
denying her unemployment com
pensation because she resigned
from a job in preference to work
ing after sundown on Friday, the
American Jewish Congress re
ported.
Miss Adele Scheimald resigned
from her position after her em
ployer found it impossible to al
low her to leave early on Fridays.
Her unemployment compensation
application was rejected on the
ground that she resigned “without
good cause." An appeal was made,
with the A.J.C. providing a coun
sel, and the refergee in the case
agreed that the woman’s right to
freedom Of religion was impaired
by the original ruling. Miss
Scheimald has been declared
eligible for unemployment com
pensation benefits.
