Jews NEW YORK (AJP)—Reports that American Jews have sud denly encountered serious diffi culties in getting visas for Iran was added this week to a mount ing list of developments point ing to Iran as the next Aiub state likely to expel its Jews. Any mass expulsion of Iran's 80.000 Jews would pose a tre mendous new threat to Israel’s already strained immigration program. Another development was the disclosure that Stanley Abram- ovitz, Joint Distribution Commit tee official stationed in Teheran, has been virtually isolated in the Iranian capital. Abramovitz, the American Jewish Press learned, can no longer leave Teheran without police pcrmiss'on. Both Jewish Agency and United Jewish Appeal leaders in the United States were frankly worried. The Damascus radio for the past month has been steadily predicting that Iran would be the next Arab country to institute what it termed “compulsory repatriation” of its Jews. As Holy Days Approach: Rabbis Study Ban of ‘Mushroom’ Shules Another development which increased the worries of Jewish officials about Iran was that state’s action in closing its con sulate in Jerusalem on July 7. Iran was one of the few Moslem states which did not participate in the 1948 invasions of Pales tine. I'he effect of a sudden mass exodus of almost 100,000 Iranian Jews into Israel was viewed here as serious. Any such heavy migration added to the steady of flow of European refugees now jamming the Jewish State's ab- sorbtive resources would pose a serious problem, Jewish officials here admitted. They expressed hope that any such mass expulsion by the na tionalist-pressed Iranian gov ernment could be aver'ed. NEW YORK CITY (AJP)—A promise of vigorous action against “mushroom synagogues” which spring up annually for the High Holidays was made this week by the New York Board of Rabbis, which represents 500 Reform, Conservative and Or thodox rabbis. Rabbi Harold Gordon, execu tive secretary of the board, said that with the Holy Days ap proaching, the board was study ing ways of implementing a state law which makes it a mis demeanor to seek to capitalize on religious interests for private gain. Two committees of the board, one on religious observances and one on legislation, are in confer ence with state authorities on application of the law to pro moters of the quickie synagogues us well as on means reporting such cases, Rabbi Gordon told the American Jewish Press. He said that because of the lateness of Rosh Hashonah this year, the volume of complaints was smaller than usual but that it was expected to grow. He re vealed that communities outside the state have contacted thd board for advice on the problem. Asserting that New York Jews as he saw them” care little about their religion and its meaning,” Rabbi Fox said that he had observed incidents of Jewish living which he had never seen in his 50 years in Chicago. He cited a case of a Jewish family which had a non-kosher kitchen and even ate pork pro ducts. “But the head of the family lays tephillin as does the son and of course with covered head,” Rabbi Fox wrote. He also said he had a friendly discussion with members of the family, who told him they saw nothing strange about it. “And I was assured that in New York this practice is not unusual,” the Chicago rabbi de clared. “What a live bunch of rabbis with guts to stand the gaff could do in New York,” he con cluded. “We need a few Jewish Billy Sundays to awaken New York Jews to their responsibili ties." JWV Arranging Memorable Parade and Patriotic Rally for Labor Day A vivid array of color and uniform is being lined up for the J.W.V. parade on Labor Day, Sept. 3, one of the high lights of the forthcoming National JWV Encampment in Atlanta.
