During the same week that
Israel celebrated the second
birthday of her own El Al Israel
Airlines, was Major Hehuda
Kopel, El Al’s America traffic
and sales manager, was in At
lanta to establish close relations
between Israel Airlines and do
mestic carriers.
Major Koppel explained, in an
interview with The Southern Is
raelite, on Aug. 1. that he was
stopping over in Atlanta enroute
back to his New York offices
from Miami where he explored
the possibilities of setting up’Is-
rael Airlines permanent repre
sentation in that area.

Ql’ESTION: I was once told

on Aug. 11 and delayed to the

than the destruction of the two
temples. Could you enlighten me
as to this? (T. T., Brooklyn.
N. Y.)
ANSWER: Yes, The fast day
of the ninth day of Ab does
commemorate other tragedies
besides that of the destruction of
the Temple. The Talmud (Tal
mud Babli, Tractate Taanit, 29a)
points out that it was on this day
that the Hebrews in the desert
were the recipients of the decree
telling them that they could not
enter the promised land. \he city
of Bethar was conquered on that
day, captured and destroyed,
terminating the heroic uprising
of Bar Kochba against the Ro
man power of Hadrian. The city
of Jerusalem was plowed over
with a plowshare on that day.
Strangely enough, the day set by
Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain
to expel all the Jews from Spain
in 1492 was also that very same
day of the ninth of Ab. It seems
then that the ninth of Ab was a
pre-destined day of misfortune
for the people of Israel.

QUESTION: Why is it custo
mary to remove the “Parodies"
(the velvet curtain) which veils
the Holy Ark, on the fast of the
ninth of Ab?
ANSWER: Many writers trace
this custom to the revolting act
of Titus the Roman. (Talmud
Babli, Tractate Yoma, 57). It is
said that he entered the Holy
Temple bent upon its destruction
and defilement and pierced the
of Service
owned by the government. It
flew its first trip on July 29,
1949, from Lydda International
Airport, Israel, to Paris. At that
time El Al had few planes, flew
to only one or two countries and
the staff was very small.
“Today the Israel airlines
flies to every major city in the
continent, as well as having New
York flights to and fro from
Europe,' Major Koppel said with
pride. He addl'd that the airlines
had developed into a tremendous
organization, its rapid growth
amazes other airline officials.
"El Al’s fleet comprises modern
Constellations as well as Douglas
Skymasters and Curtiss Com
mando transports piloted by
veil of the Holy of Holies with
his sword. When he withdrew
his sword blood spurted forth.
He was led to think that he even
murdered the divine presence
with this act because of the
blood which he thought he shed.
Since the ark-cover in the syna
gogue is supposed to be a replica
of the ancient veil in the holy
Temple that separated the Holy
of Holies from the rest of the
Temple, we remove the ark cover
as a reminder of what the vic
ious Titus did to that veil in the
course of the destruction of the
Temple.

QUESTION: Why in it custo
mary to visit the cemetery on the
fast of the ninth of Ab?
ANSWER: Cemeteries are gen
erally visited on trying days and
the ninth of Ab is no exception.
The general reasons are divided
in two. On the one hand, we
show that we are to be likened
unto the dead because of our
trouble and helplessness without
the Lord’s aid. On the other
hand, we appeal to those who
passed on to pray for us before
the Almighty’s throne. The Mid
rash writes that the prophet of
Jeremiah who prophesied the
destruction of the Temple, made
a pilgrimmage to the graves of
the Patriarchs imploring them to
intercede on behalf of Israel to
avert the evil decree. Thus, we
do likewise to implore the dead
to pray for the day of deliver
ance for all.
veteran American, English and
Scandinavian flyers," the major
said.
The blond, good looking Israeli
executive is only 32. He pointed
out that the majority of the offi
cials of the Israel airlines and
other Israel industries are young
men. His esteem for his country
was reflected in his voice when
he said, “After all, this is to be
expected, Israel is a young coun
try of young people.”
As a traffic ;md sales manager,
Koppel was on a sort of goodwill
tour while traveling in Florida
and Georgia. In addition to
working with local airlines, he
visits and addresses local travel
agents and social, civic, business
and fraternal organizations.
The Russian born major came
to Israel when he was a young
boy. He knew the country before
World War II and the Arab war.
He later was an officer with
Wingate’s Night Raiders, with
the British Palestine Army, with
the Israel Underground and with
the British in Africa and Europe.
He visits his home in Haifa
about three times a year. He re
marked that when he returns
home to Israel he is always
astonished at the fast develop
ment and constant changes in the
country. “The new colonies, new
life, the deep penetration into the
Negev and the pulse of the peo
ple are reflected in everything
connected with the new state,
including El Al,” Major Koppel
said.

Savannah Dentist
A 50-year-old Savannah den
tist, Dr. Herbert Levington, mi
raculously made his way ashore
at Savannah Beach, July 24,
after swimming and floating al
most six hours in a semi-con
scious state.
The dentist, a strong swimmer,
apparently lost consciousness
while taking an after-dinner
swim. The tide swept him away
from the beach. Dr. Livington
said he remembered nothing un
til he was far out in the water.
He thought he had been afloat
only an hour.
The doctor entered the surf
about 8:30 p. m. He returned
exhausted to the beach about
2:40 a. in. His cries for help
brought searchers wading out in
the surf to assist him. Ilis wife
had previously notified the Beach
police.

UJA May face New Crisis as
70,000 JEWS OF IRAN
FEAR MOUNTING UNREST
Iran’* widespread political unrest marked by a violent upswing in nationalistic
feeling has brought alarm and panic to that country’s Jewish community. At
of the end of June, more than 70,000 of Iran’s 100,000 Jewa had registered for
emigration to Israel. This development may present the United Jewish Appeal
and its agencies w ith another great emigration crisis. An aarlier crisis involved
the Jews of Iraq, whs.se rescue has been made possible by the United Palestine
Appeal with funds raised through the UJA. Still earlier, the UJA provided for
the rescue of the Jews of Yemen, who were moved eitmasse to Israel in 1949.
