NEW YORK CITY (AJP) —
the son of a rabbi who reluctant
ly chose a career in law in place
of entering the rabbinate as urg
ed by the late Dr. Stephen S.
Wise this week became the na
tion’s second top man in charge
of the ruman Administration’s
campaign to cleanup corruption
in the Federal Government.
Appointed as deputy Special
Assistant to Newbold Morris, the
Special Assistant Attorney Gen
eral in charga of the cleanup,
was Morton Baum, a former
president of New York City’s
Council under the administra
tion of Mayor LaGuardia.
In lauding Baum, Morris dis
closed that the Jewish civic lead
er had accepted the key post as
“a great personal sacrifice.” This
was seen as a reference to
Baum's nelinquishing a much
higher income in private life to
accept the government role.
Behind the man who will be
in charge of the cleanup when
ever Morris is absent from Wash
ington is the story of a Jew who
has always actively associated
himself with his people. In his
boyhood, Baum and a brother,
Lester, a former New York State
Senator, studied Hebrew with
their father, a rabbi. Young
Baum was later to attract the
attention of Dr. Wise.
The famed Jewish leader de
veloped an interest in Baum,
even envisioned him as a pos
sible successor in years to come,
the American Jewish Press learn
ed this week.
‘‘If only Morty would study
for the rabbinate,” Dr. Wise re
marked more than once.
Though Baum was to decide on
a career in law and civic affairs
instead, his interest in Judaism
was so intense that in his late
teens he split a heavy study
schedule to simultaneously at
tend Columbia University and
the Hebrew Union College for
Teachers. He was graduated from
Russava, District Kiev, Russia is be
ing sought by Ephraim Zarchi (Zor-
chlnsky) son of Jacob and Liba, born
I in 1898 now in Israel. (No. 1265).
Georgia Commissioner of Ag
riculture, Tom Linder, was high
ly praised for expressing his
anti-UN views in the official
Georgia Farmer’s Market Bulle
tin by Frank Ohlquist, Secretary
of the Constitutional Alliance or
ganization of Los Angeles, Cal.
Mr. Ohlquist has in the past been
active in Gerald L. K. Smith’s
Christian Nationalist Crusade.
both with high honors and in
near-record time.
Later, the Jewish student re
ceived his law degree from Har
vard and embarked on a career.
A closeness grew between Baum
and the fiery, crusading Fiorello
LaGuardia, the latter making his
mark as a Congressman. When
New York City’s famed “Little
Flower” was swept into office
as mayor on the wave of a good
government tide, Baum was ask
ed to lend a helping hand. He
did and for three years begin
ning in 1935 served as tax coun
sel for the City of New York.
Baum was credited with au
thorizing the city sales tax and
other revenue measures now en
forced in America’s, giant city.
Prior to tackling the heavy tasks
of tax counsel, he served an ap
prenticeship as a member of the
Board of Alderman in N.Y.C.
His active participation in
Jewish life through the years
kept pace with his rise in civic
affairs. As a trustee of the He-
brewt Union College-Jewish In
stitute of Religion, Baum played
a key role in affecting the amal
gamation of the two Reform pil
lars. He also served as Chairman
of the Jewish Statistical Bureau.

nored by the citizens of Colum
bus. However, the various organ
izational leaders present had am
ple opportunity during the three-
day sessions to coordinate their
efforts and their plans. In the
opinion of experienced observers
intensification of anti-United
Nations and anti-minority prop
aganda on a national and re
gional level will be the result of
this conclave. ,

Leonard Bernstein Assumes Duties
At Brandeis School of Art
WALTHAM, Mass. (JTA) —
Leonard Bernstein, conductor-
composer, assumed his new du
ties as director of the Brandeis
University School of Creative
Arts. Under his direction the
school will integrate courses in
music, drama, creative writing,
the fine arts and the dance.
“The Brandeis Creative Art
School will not only combine in
strumental instruction with es
thetic and cultural studies of an
advanced musical degree, but
will integrate courses in music,
fine arts, and the dance and
strike a balance between the the
oretical study of the creative
arts and an applied study em
phasizing the point to which each
art form is put,” Mr. Bernstein
said in a statement here.
“Students arriving at Bran
deis will undoubtedly possess
technical abilities,” Mr. Bern
stein declared, “and for that rea
son the University will not de
vote itself to teaching piano, or
draftsmanship or the fundamen
tals of any art. But with an im
pressive faculty,” the young mu
sician stated, “Brandeis will help
to provide the finishing touches
in technique and at the same
time emphasize the meaning of
art.”
