Library Exhibiting
Mexican Collection
of Joe Gross
An exhibit of various crafts
and works of Mexican art is on
display in the Forsythe Street
windows of the Atlanta public
library. These represent a cross-
section of the collection amassed
by Joe Gross of 1754 Helen Dr.,
N.E.
During the past seventeen
years, Mr. Gross and his family
have made nine extensive tours
of the various regions of Mexico.
With growing interest he accu
mulated representative works of
Mexican crafts, instead of the
usual tourist’s souvenirs.
Thus watching the progress of
Mexican craftsmanship and the
ensuing ventures into world
competitive fields, Mr. Gross has
decided to turn his hobby into
a full-time endeavor—its distri
bution in the American market.

Mr. Gross feels that he is not
entirely abandoning his field as
a professional social service
worker. He believes that intro
duction of the Mexican indus
tries into the American home
will be a means for sharing this
Southern neighbor’s creative way
of life.
The collection consists of in
teresting and unique pieces of
Mexican jewelry; useful, attrac
tive, hand tooled leather ar
ticles; examples of fine, modern
Mexican silversmiths; delicate
hand blown glass works of art;
museum quality Mexican hand
weaving, represented by throws,
spreads, etc.; and a large assort
ment of well constructed, attrac

made furniture.
Mr. Gross will be glad to give
details to anyone interested. His
exhibit, incidentally, will later
be on display at several branch

Spirit of U.J.A.
(Continued from page one)
to present the UJA as an ad
vance cash gift. Kaufman pride-
fully pointed out this set a prec
edent for a student body . . .
Morris Bohrman of Newman
(Ga.) presented a $1,000 bank
loan endorsed by himself and K.
Perrell . . . Sam Karp, repre
senting the Karp’s and the Wise-
bram’s—total Jewish population
of Barnesville, Ga., had $700 ad
vance cash. Huntsville (Ala.)
sent $4,000 as their advance cash,
sparked by Chairman Lawrence
B. Goldsmith and Secretary
Louis Miller.
And so it went. Atlanta, too,
did herself proud with Chair
man Medintz announcing its
$150,000 bank loan. Community
after community was represented
with cash for United Jewish Ap
peal. The thousands of onlookers
in spirit must have indeed been
proud.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS: Mrs.
Nathan Blass of Atlanta, spoke
feelingly from the floor of the
need to always keep sight of the
human goals represented by UJA
dollars . . . Ellis Radinsky’s trib
ute to Barney Medintz and James
Permutt, Birmingham State
Chairman and Conference co-
Chairman, as he presented a
scroll to each of them in the
name of the “Needy Jews
throughout the world whom you
both so magnificently aid , . .”
Ed Kahn, Atlanta’s fiery Wel
fare Fund Executive Director,
impassioned insistence that mon
ey raised has to be allocated on
the basis of need . . . that a Jew
in need must be helped whether
he is from Atlanta or from Mo
rocco.
Another UJA milestone was
passed with the conclusion of the
Southeast Regional Conference.
With it went additional proof, as
expressed by the actions of those
present, that United Jewish Ap
peal is creative, heartening and
the best expression of Jewish
heart and Jewish soul.
