“Joint” Sets a Passover Table
Communities which have welfare fund drives un
derway or pending will find special interest in this ar
ticle which has just reached our desk. The material
deals with the Passover activities of the Joint Distribu
tion Committee, one of the beneficiary agencies of the
United Jewish Appeal. We particularly like this ac
count for it indicates a continuity with what J.D.C. has
done in previous years—with a part of the philanthrophy
which we have made available, and the continual need
for our aid in bolstering the religious morale of our
Jewish brothers. —THE EDITOR

Thirty-seven years of welfare
experience among distressed and
needy Jews abroad have prepar
ed the Joint Distribution Com
mittee for the one eventuality on
which it may count every year,
no matter what other* emergen
cies it may have to face. Come
what may, each springtime
evokes a widespread demand for
J.D.C. aid in obtaining Passover
supplies; and J.D.C. is already
busy filling the bill to provide a
satisfying celebration of the tra
ditional holiday of the Exodus
from Egypt.

In the years immediately fol
lowing the end of the war, J.D.C.
provided the great bulk of the
Passover material required for
all the countries on the Euro
pean continent. This year, how
ever. many countries need no
help from J.D.C. at all—they can
take care of their own require
ments. Others call on "Joint” (as
it is known throughout Europe)
to provide them only with cer
tain items that they cannot oth
erwise obtain, and some are even
willing to pay for what they get
So we find J.D.C. sending Pass-
oxer sugar—and nothing else—
to Greece this year.
The organization gets an ap
peal from the Jewish community
of Tanganyika in South Central
Africa, so it sends matzoth to the
20 Jews living there, who can
get the unleavened bread in no
other way. And because the East
European Orthodox rabbinical
groups in France and Italy wish
to prepare their own ‘‘guarded”
matzoth, J.D.C. provided them
with 1,200 pounds of what is
known as “shmura" flour, with
which they baked their own mat
zoth.
Yet, despite these reductions
in service, and despite the fact
that purchases were made only
after bids were received from
many firms in many countries.
J.C.D.’s bill for special holiday
supplies comes to a healthy $50,-
000 and more. This does not in

Dear Editor;
May I take this occasion to
thank you for the copies of the
Southern Israelite which you
sent me before my hasty depar
ture from Atlanta. I read them
with great interest and profit.
Also, I passed on some copies
to fellow Chaplains.
I think you ought to be con
gratulated for the excellent
coverage you gave our Confer

outstanding and very worth

vided in the J.D.C.-operated
“Malben” institutions in Israel.
Nor does it include the canteens
of North Africa, where the meals
served to thousands of children
daily will be “kosher for Pass-
over” during the holiday.
Supplies purchased by J.D.C.
for the 1952 celebration include
238,000 pounds of matzoth, 85,-
000 pounds of matzoth meal, 4,-
500 bottles of wine, 18,000 kilo
grams of sugar.
Major beneficiary of the J.D.C.
supplies will be Hungary which
will receive 125,000 pounds of
matzoth and 50,000 pounds of
matzoth meal. This is not sur
prising since J.D.C.'s program in
Hungary is its largest in Europe,
30,000 Hungarian Jews having
received aid from the American
organization in 1951.
Hungary, by the way, is the
only one of the so-called ‘‘iron
curtain" countries in which J.D.C.
still operates, all other offices
having been closed in the past
few years. Passover aid is being
given, however, to Albania,
where the local Jewish commun
ity has asked for help in ob-
s. rving the holiday, and J.D.C.
sent 1,500 pounds of matzoth to
that tiny country.
The Jewish communities of
Austria, Belgium, France, Ger
many, Greece, Italy, Portugal,
Spain and Yugoslavia, as well as
North African youths being
trained in Youth Aliyah centers
for life on Israel’s farms, will
also be providad for in accor
dance with their needs, and those
having the financial means are
expected to partially reimburse
J.D.C. for its gift. In all, the J.
D. C. provisions will reach some
45,000 persons in 11 European
countries.
All this did not taks place
overnight. It is the end result
of months of planning, of re
ceiving bids for orders, of draw
ing up time schedules and ar
ranging for shipping space. The
job for 1952 is done—but in June
of this year the purchasing de
partment will start asking for
bids for 1953. Some Jews observe
Passover for seven days; some
for eight days; the Jews working
for J.D.C. have Passover with
them for 10 months every year.
