Linder the leadership of co-chairman Dr. Theodore

men at the Progressive Club on March 31 for the pur
pose of choosing assignments of prospects.
The entire division, consisting of co-chairmen, col
onels and captains, will meet for a campaign kick-off
breakfast on Sunday, April fi, at 10:15 a.m. at the Pro
gressive Club where they will receive workers kits and lay
final plans for getting to work on the actual solicitation
phase of the campaign.
Solicitation of contributors in the general division will
start immediately after breakfast.
BOSTON (AJP)—A new rack
et, this one operating from out
side the U. S. but preying on
recently bereaved American
Jews, was exposed here this
week by the Boston Better Busi
ness Bureau.
The BBB charged that “two
individuals operating from
abroad currently are mailing un
ordered Yahrzeit tables (or ta
blets) to recently bereaved
Americans of the Jewish faith,
requesting two dollars in pay
ment.’’
(The Yahrzeit table serv'es as
a reminder of the day each year
over a period of time when a
member of the family died so it
can be kept in special memory.
The tablet gives the correspond
ing date of the Gregorian calen
dar of the anniversary dates of
death on the Jewish calendar).
According to the bureau, letters
containing a tablet printed on a

INDIANAPOLIS (AJP)—The
pot boiled over this week in the
first head-on open clash over
coordination of efforts in behalf
of Israel by the Israel Bond
Drive and the United Jewish
Appeal with both side claming
a victory in the torrid dispute.
The battle over Bonds vs. UJA
was climaxed with a dinner here
Suhday night which BIG spokes
men reported raised $155,000 in
bond purchases. Considered by
veteran observers as a test case
in the operation of Bond and
UJA campaigns on the local
scene, the violent dispute here
centered about opposition by
members of the board of the lo
cal federation to plans by Israel
Bond leaders to sponsor a BIG
dinner which they claimed would
adversely affect the UJA-Jewish
Federation campaign.
Members of the federation
board voted earlier by a 34-1
count to oppose the Myerson
tribute if sponsored under Bond
auspices. Instead, they urged

The BBB pointed out that “re
cipients are under no obligation

use it.”
BOSTON (AJP) — The Ku
Klux Klan was blamed this week
for the burning of a cross on the
lawn of a building recently ac
quired by the Jewish Tubercu-
losist Sanitarium of New Eng
land.
Police immediately entered the
case amid a statement by the
institution’s honorary president,
attorney Maurice Caro, that the
cross burning was not the work
of juveniles.
“We can attribute this act,” he
said, “to depraved minds im-
that her appearanoe be under
the sponsorship of the UJA-
Jewish Welfare Fund Campaign.
Spokesmen for the federation
said that the bond drive had of
fered to hold the meeting under
joint sponsorship, but that they
had refused.
Key bond personnel, utilizing
newspaper ads, radio and tele
vision, woged a widescale cam
paign to publicize the Myerson
meeting. A non-sectarian com
mittee under whose sponsorship
the tribute was presented in
cluded Gov. H. F. Shricker, May
or Alex Clark and others. The
Governor was the principal
speaker at the meeting Sunday
evening.
The dispute which began with
the early planning for the bond
dinner continued to the day of
the actual meeting.
These are the latest major
highlights of the score spot:

Earlier, a local fire chief ex
pressed the belief that “prank
sters” had erected the cross.
Marks on the lawn, however, in
dicated that the solid, eight-foot
cross had been transported by
truck and driven into the ground
by grown men.

a several-month-long calm in the
Boston area. Juvenile acts of

the Hub City vicinity last year.
LOS ANGELES (AJP)— Dan
ger signals were hoisted here this
week with two bombings, one
aimed at a Jew who sold his pre
vious residency to a Negro school
teacher and the other at the new
occupant.
A leading English-Jewish
weekly here immediately asked
editorially whether a visit by
hate artist Gerald L. K. Smith
last week “had any bearing on
the bombing atrocity.”
Central figures in the outrages
were Bernard Hartstein and a
local Negro school teacher, Wil
liam Bailey. Hartstein formerly
owned the Bailey residence.
Bombs were exploded at Har-
stein’s apartment and the Bailey
home last Sunday.
Hartstein and Bailey’s wife
and youngster escaped serious
injury in the blasts. Aruthorities
are investigating the outrage, it
was learned this week.
The B’nai B’rith Messenger,
which posed the question of a
possible link between the bomb
ings and Smith’s visit here, com
mented that “now' we find that
what happened in Miami, Fla.,
in a Klan atmosphere, can hap
pen in as cosmopolitan a city as
Los Angeles.”

Israeli delegation disclosed to
day.
The announcement was made,
he declared, to counteract un
officials statements that this is

These two handsome men in uniform present a testimony to
the constructive aspects of American Jewry’s support of the agencies
comprising the United Jewish Appeal. Henry Zaks and Joseph
Baumgarten, above, were friends in Warsaw. As youngsters they
were sent to concentration camps, rescue and finally brought to
the United States by the United Service for New Americans, one
of the U.J.A. agencies. Resettled in California, they met again as
both completed basic training as United States Army privates. ‘We
love America, probably more than many who were born here,”
they said. “We realize how lucky we really are to be here." Private
Baumgarten’s family perished during the war. They were also
brought to America as displaced persons by United Service.
