SPORTS WORLD by Bill Wolf
Brandeis U. and Sabbath Qames
Brandeis University’s gridiron
schedule for next fall is evidence
that the Jewish-sponsored uni
versity intends to go right on
with Sabbath football. All ex
cept one of the contests are set
for Saturdays. This does not pre
clude a switch in policy as an
outcome of negotiations that have
been taking place between Prexy
Abram L. Sacher and leading
rabbis. However, the schedule
that was just announced indi
cates a determination to con
tinue Saturday games if possible.
The scheduling of one Sunday
afternoon game, the first such
contest that the Brandeis eleven
will ever have played, appar
ently shows that university of
ficials realize they may have to
bow to religious pressure. The
Sunday game may well be a test
project to see what could be done
in the event the team has to be
sidelined on the Sabbath.
As for the grid card itself, sev
en games are on tap, with the
opener slated for September 27
against the University of Bridge
port in an away contest. Bridge
port is a new foe. Other new op
ponents include Northeastern,
University of Massachusetts, and
the New Haven Teachers. Only
three teams are carried over
from last season’s schedule —
Wayne University, Arnold Col
lege, and American International
College.
There’s something about
Brooklyn that seems to produce
good basketball teams. Once
again a Brooklyn club has walk
ed off with the championship
in the basketball tourney spon
sored by the National Jewish
Welfare Board. Playing in Balti
more March 8 and 9, the Ben-
sonhurst JCH took the title for
the second year In a row. The
Bensonhurst team fought its way
into the finals and knocked off
Baltimore 72-60. Brooklyn had
defeated Toronto in the semi
finals and Baltimore had downed
Mt. Vernon, N. Y. Eight teams
from the U. S. and Canada par
ticipated following preliminary
playoffs involving hundreds oi
center and Y. M. H. A. teams to
determine regional entrants in
the national tourney. In keeping
with the general run of things,
the trophy for the most valuable
player was awarded Archie Lip-
ton of the Brooklyn club. The
games were played in the Bal
timore Center before crowds that
included top figures in Jewish
sports circles. The event is one
of the major sports projects of
the J. W. B.

★ Championed a Jewish State
★ Fought for Its Establishment
★ Vows to See It Succeed
For 54 years, the ZOA—the Zionist Organization of America—has led the way in this country
in the efforts for Jewish statehood. But past performance is not enough. The job is not yet
done. Israel is still an infant among nations; she cannot do a grown man’s task alone. She
needs our continued help in creating jobs and a secure future. That is a challenge to us—to
the ZOA . . . and to you! Our answer to that challenge is the ZOA’s 1952 program for Israel.
Read it through—then make up your mind today to pitch in and lend a hand by joining the
ZOA!
