I shan’t
have fulfilled my function in Is

(shop requesting “Priority for
Pregnant Women.” Being preg
nant is a tough enough job for
a woman in any country, but in
Israel, especially during the sum
mer heat, any extra considera
tion the community can give
them is all too little.
Soldiers and sailors automatic
ally get priority on buses; so do
tourists, journalists, members of
the Knesset, and doctors (who
also get priority in fish and
meat queues, which their wives
naturally exploit to the ut
most!) But an expectant mother
must stand it out to the bitter
end. I’ve seen women in shop
ping queues looking over their
shoulder to make solicitous in
quiries of friends heavy with

occur to them to exchange places
in the queue with them.
“Pnina,” I said to my Tnuva
woman, where this happens all
the time, “why don’t you put up
a notice asking people to give
priority to pregnant women?”
She gave her usual weary shrug,
born of 20 years service to the
public, and said, “Who would
pay attention to it?”
She may be right, because odd
ly enough, such a thing happen
ed to me in England, whose
courtesy and consideration are
by-words. Expectant mothers
are given a special ration book,
and on a page at the back is
printed in large letters: “Priority
Please.” This discreet message
is enough, because everyone
knows what it means.
I remember going up to a
woman at the head of a bus
queue, when my condition was
unmistakable, and showing her
this card, saying “Priority
Please.”
“Oh, yes,” she said coldly,
without budging, “I’ve heard that
one before!”
I always give up my own place
but there are times when even
I begin to wonder. Not long ago
I exchanged places with the wo
man behind me in queue, and
she broke into profuse thanks,
"I’ve been shopping all morn
ing,” she said. “I’m so tired I
can hardly stand on my feet.”
Then minutes later, when I
had finished my business at the
counter, I turned around and saw
her standing chatting cheerfully
with someone farther down the
queue! Nu, what can you. do
with women!
I always shock my women
friends when I tell them that I
don’t think that women are the
equal of men. If I weren’t afraid
of starting an argument, I would
be prepared to say that in many
respects I think they are super
ior. But that is not the point. I
simply mean that this insistence
on women’s physical equality
with men is old-fashioned.
It is certainly out of date in
Israel anyway, where it had a
really practical significance in
the old days of chalutziot when
swamp-draining and road build
ing were done laboriously by
hand. It didn’t take long for both
sexes to see that there wasn’t
much point in trying to get a
stone for a stone from a person
whom nature had built on a dif
ferent mould, and for different
purposes. Anyway, who was go
ing to take care of the babies, or
