even the chickens?
And so today in the kibbutz it
is almost an exception to find
women doing anything except
the “homely,” “womanly” jobs.
They are called “sheruth,” or
“service” jobs. Men are permit
ted, in fact expected, to do their
turn at kitchen duties, but the
only way they can penetrate into
the nursery or kindergarten is in
the role of parent.
However, the kibbutz women’s
fight for feminine emancipation
has won rewards which I, per
sonally envy so much that I have
often been tempted to join a
kibbutz, just for that reason.

Women in Israel outside the
kibbutz, even rich women, do
not seem to have achieved it yet.
No woman in a kibbutz, just
as no man, has to put in more
than eight hours a day at any
job. After that she can forget
her household responsibilities
and worries about the children,
and take part in politics, dra
matics, music, or just simply sit
and knit.
It makes my mouth water.
There is no country in the world
where active women are so
needed in communal work. And
yet, in no country is it so im
portant and so difficult to give
one’s children careful attention
as it is in Israel. And if in addi
tion to that you’ve got two or
three hour’s shopping every day
just for bare necessities, you’ve
got to do some neat organizing to
fit it all in. In spite of this, there
are plenty of women here who
do manage it. They must be stal
warts in every sense of the word.
Perhaps you would be interested
in knowing something of the
women here in Haifa who do
public work and run their homes
at the same time?
