Passover--A Family Holiday
—4
BY HAROLD EIDLIN
The candles glows brightly in
the silver candlabra. The fes
tive table is piled high with
things to eat. And the family is
there. From near and far they
come to play a part in the cele
bration.
That is how it is, this Passover
in millions of Jewish homes
throughout the world. For that
is how it has been for more than
3,000 years.
It does not matter that what
there is to eat depends upon
many things—even economic and
locale. What is important is that
the family is present.
Without it, there would be no

Passover.
Celebrated w i t h unbroken
regularity for more than 30 cen
turies, Passover is one of the old
est festivals known to civilized
man. In the course of time many
things concerning the festival
the Seder have undergone
changes But one thing that has
never changed is the central
theme of the holiday, namely,
that the Seder meal is to be eaten
in common by all the members
of the family.
So strong was this belief in
Biblical times that the ancient
Israelite scribes wrote that any
member of the family who failed
to participate in the meal would
be deemed to have “cut himself
off from his people.”
Nothing as drastic as that is
done, or thought, today. But
imagine how bleak would be the
Seder without the family to help
in the celebration!
There is an interesting theory
that the original purpose of the
paschal meal was to solidify the
ties of kinship, infuse new life
and renew the bonds of mutual
protection among the family.
The modern Seder accomplish
es at least the first two of these
objectives.
No one is overlooked in today’s
celebration. Every member of
the family is provided with an
Haggadah of his own so that he
may follow and, in fact, read for
himself tlie wonderful saga of
the exodus of the Jews from
Egypt. Each member of the fam
ily performs his own sanctifica
tion (the Kiddusch). Each par
takes in the spilling of the wine,
signifying the ten plagues visited
upon the Egyptians. Ancl every
member of the family is given to
eat a small piece of matzoh with
bitter herbs and charoseth.
What more complete symbol of
participation by the family could
there be than when in the open
ing moments of the Seder the
head of the house lifts the dish
containing the bone and the egg
and is joined in holding it by all
at the table?
Further evidence, if it is need
ed, that the theme of the Pass-
over meal is a common sharing
of the food, is provided by the
ancient belief that the original
purpose the opening of the door
during the Seder was to permit
plethe participants inside the
house to call in the hungry peo
ple from the streets.
One of the most pleasant
things about the Seder are the
children. Who has not been
touched by the wide-eyed won
derment of the children at the

Seder table? Who has not flush
ed with pride as the youngest lad
present rises to ask the four
questions? Indeed, were it not
for these questions, how could
the head of the house recount
the story of the Exodus?
Even the hallowed tradition of
the hiding and seeking of the
afikomen has the warm glow of
a family affair.
Its original purpose, we are
told, was to provide a little game
for the children as a means of
keeping them awake during the
long Seder service.
