AT HOME IN ISRAEL
Eva Peron
WITH ANITA ENGEL
Exclusive Columnist for The Southern Israelite
I’m such a rabid femininist, my
heart invariably goes out to any
woman who shows strength of
character. I was particularly in
terested, therefore, to be able to
get some first hand information
about Eva Peron recently.
The occasion was the arrival in
Haifa a few weeks ago, of the
South American ship, * the Rio
Helena. It brought the last con

ing which had bPen sent by the
then-dying Eva, for the Maaba-

of supplies, the last of a 2<*0-ton
gift.

service held by the Argentinian
Labour Attache in Israel, and Is

“How did Eva Peron come to
take an interest in Israel?” I
asked the Labour Attache.
“It was in direct line with her
life’s work”, he replied, “that of
helping the helpless.”
Gift shipments to Israel were
started in 1944, at the suggestion

Argentine, Yaacov Zur, and the
Argentinian Minister to Israel.

to send?” Eva Peron asked them.

passed the message on. “For a
friend of Argentine”, she said,
“one hundred tons is not too
much.” It eventually turned into
200 tons.
“Even though she is dead, Ar
gentina’s friendship and help will
not cease”, the Labour Attache
told me, speaking in excellent He
brew, which was our only com
mon language. “It may not come
through the Eva Peron Founda
tion”, he added, as an after
thought, “but it will come.”
Madam Peron always sent spe-
