High Holy Days Message
From General Bolling
Indication of the wide seope of cooperation by Army in
stallations in this area in celebration of the High Holy Days
has been made by Lieut.-General A. R. Bolling, commander,
Third Army Area.
His communication was addressed to Brigadier General
Eugene Oberdorfer, chairman, Third Army Area, JWB-Armed
Services.
General Bolling’s message follows :
The Jewish High Holy Days including the “New Year” and
“Day of Atonement” will be observed in the Third Army Area
on military reservations and by joint services in nearby civilian
communities.
Special preparations have been made by Chaplains and Com
manding Officers in providing ample opportunity for military
personnel who desire to participate in these religious cere
monies.
These solemn days provide new opportunities for character
improvements of individuals and for renewed efforts toward a
better world, founded upon justice, tolerance, and brotherhood.
It is a privilege for me to extend to you my sinoere wishes
and to join with you in a prayer for a new era of peace on
earth.

WEEK END
(Continued from Page 1)
Chaplain Zion of Camp Gordon.
. . . Several hundred were on
hand. A dinner was slated to fol
low. Reservations had been made
for about 275, the number who
had said they’d be there for the
dinner plus forty or fifty spares.
Actually, the number grew by the
minute.
Miraculously — or rather provi
dentially — this was the first af
fair catered in the community
by a local concern and the man
ager was determined that what
ever happened he would not run
short of food. Perhaps, thinking
of the ravenous appetite of sol
diers, he came well supplied with
food. Twice in preparation he had
reordered chicken and trimmings.
And well, he did come prepared,
for in all around 400 — instead
of the original 275 — sat down to
eat — and were satisfied with an
ample, tasty meal.
Chaplain Decker, Third Army
Chaplain who had cooperated so
wonderfully throughout the years
in aiding observance of Jewish
holidays, was a guest with his
wife. He is leaving his current
assignment and made a brief fare
well message to the boys. Her
bert Elsas, Atlanta JWB-ASC
chairman, presided, at the dinner
program. Others taking part in
cluded Rabbi Rothschild, Chap
lain Zion and Mr. Goldberg.
Mrs. Brill was presented with
an orchid for her part in direct
ing the Junior Hostesses. Many
of them too were on hand to
brighten the meal.
As the soldiers loaded onto the
buses for a return to Camp Gor
don, one came over and told Mr.
Elsas simply and sincerely . . .
"You’ve made one person from
California very happy this week
end.” There was more than usual
moisture in his eyes . . .
Though there will be no organ
ized trips to Atlanta for Yom Kip-
pur, the Army will give Jewish
soldiers time off. Many will per
haps come to Atlanta on their
own.
Very likely, they again would
like a touch of home, a friendly
word, a home-cooked meal. If you
can, make that spare room avail
able to them. Tell the ASC-JWB
committee — or just walk up to
the soldiers at services and ex
tend an invitation.
