Jewish Leaders Active in
Atlanta Community Chest Drive
Numerous Jewish leaders are
taking a prominent part in this
year’s campaign for the Atlanta
Community Chest.
Meyer I falser, former chair
man of the Atlanta Welfare
Fund president of the Jewish
Community Center, is one of
three chairmen in the Metropoli
tan Division.
A. L. Feldman, a former pres
ident of the Jewish Community
Center, is a co-chairman of the
HIHS’ial committee of one hun
dred. Richard IT. Rich is a vice
chairman of this group.
Among the top metropolitan
leadership are these section
chairmen: Coleman Medintz, El
liott D. Haas, J. K. Heyman, Her
bert A. ltingel, Milton Weinstein,
Irving Libowsky, Sam Bredow,
Arthur Weiss, Leon Goldstein,
Arnold Hoffman, Norman Dia
mond, Max Robkin, Dave Ep
stein, Harris Goldwasser, Sidney
C}. Janus, Charles Massed, Max
Kuniansky, Mendel Segal, and
W. B. Schwartz, Jr., are among
the district chairmen.

Fral Resigns
Over Bias
ALBANY, N. Y. (JTA—The
entire membership of the Albany
State Teachers College chapter
of Kappa Defta Rho fraternity
resigned in protest against a pol
icy of religious discrimination in
membership followed by the na
tional organization, it was an
nounced this week. The 62 form
er chapter members have formed
a new, unaffiliated fraternity.
Their spokesman said today that
in the past two years the nation
al fraternity had blackballed five
Jewish students pledged by the
Albany chapter.
WINNIPEG, Man. (JTA)—A
four day series of events marked
the dedication of Winnipeg’s new
Talmud Torah. Participants
were Mayor Garnet Coulter, D.
L. Campbell, Premier of Manito
ba, and others.

SUCCOTH MEETING
A review of -S'olem Asch’s
“Moses” will be the feature at
the Succoth meeting of B’nai
B’rith Women of Atlanta at 1:30
p. m. Monday, Oct. 13, at the
Progressive Club.
The review will be made by
Mrs. Robert Church. Another
feature will be a discussion by
Mrs. John G. Lewis, co-ordinator
of Women’s Defense Activities
for the State of Georgia. A ten-
minute film, "Survival Under
Atomic Attack,” will conclude the
program.
An open board meeting will be
held at 11 a. m., according to
Mrs. Michael Harris, president.
The meeting will adjourn for
luncheon.

Irving Levy, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Levy, has been dis
charged from the Army and is
now back in Augusta.

discharged from the Navy and is
now at home in Augusta with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hyman
Lichtenstein.

Miss Elaine Estroff was hon
ored at several pre-nuptial par
ties recently. Mrs. Israel Sha
piro, Mrs. Irving Greenfield and
Mrs. James Glasser were hosts
at a luncheon in her honor at the
Elks Club. Her aunt, Mrs. Na
than Steinberg, and cousins Mrs.
Joe Steinberg and Mrs. Melvin
Elstein entertained at a supper
party.

was broken here this week for
the $215,000 addition to the syn
agogue of Congregation Sons of
Jacob.

B*nai B’rith’s 109th Birthday
Niles Dies
BOSTON (JTA) — Funeral
services were held here for Da
vid K. Niles, executive assistant
to Presidents Roosevelt and Tru
man, who died here at the age of
63. The sor. of Russian immi
grants to the U. S., Mr. Niles
went to Washington in 1932
shortly after President Roose
velt’s election and remained a
trusted assistant to both Presi
dents until his death. President
Truman was represented at the
funeral services and the Govern
ment of Israel was represented
by Consul General Arthur Lourie
and Lt. Col. Giladi, Israeli mili
tary attache in Washington.
CHATTANOOGA — Anniver
saries will be the theme of the
Tuesday, Oct. 14 meeting of the
Stanley Lachiman Lodge, No.
446, B’nai B’rith, at the Edge-
wood Country Club here.
Members will celebrate the
109th birthday of the national
lodge and the silver anniversary
of the Home and Hospital for the
Aged in Memphis.
Morris Abrams, Atlanta at
torney, will be guest speaker. The
Lodge will be presented with the
Archibald Marx plaque.
Dr. Howard Gault is chairman
of the meeting, aided by Alex M.
Alper, Harry Dubrow, Jay Sil-
verstein, Buddy Weber and the
Lodge trustees.
SOUTIIERN OBITUABIES
HARRY FURST
Harry Herman Furst, 65, of
Atlanta, died October 1 as a re
sult of gunshot wounds received
in a holdup of the liquor store
where he was working.
Rabbi Tobias Geffen and Rab-
bio Arnold Heisler conducted the
funeral October 6 at the Chapel
of Henry Blanchard & Son. Bu
rial was in Greenwood Ceme
tery.
Surviving Mr. Furst are his
wife; a son, Leonard Furst; a
daughter, Mrs. Herbert Gold
man, Los Angeles; a grandson,
Stanley Howard Furst.
Mr. Furst was a Mason, a
member of the Motion Picture
Salesmen Association, and Tent
No. 30, Variety Club, and Shear-
ith Israel Congregation.

Norman Joseph Shoenig of Sa
vannah died Monday, August 25,
while on vacation at Miami Beach.
Funeral services were held Au
gust 27 in Savannah. Rabbi S. E.
Starrels of Miokve Israel Syna
gogue officiated. Burial was in
Bonaventure Cemetery.
Born November 22, 1902, in
Thomasville, he had resided in
Savannah nearly all his life. He
was president of the Georgia Mat
tress and Upholstering Co. and
the Georgia Awning and Canvas
Producers Co.

er, Louis Isaac of Philadelphia;
five grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews.
MAYER PIIIA
Mayer Piha, 71, of Montgomery
died Tuesday, Oct. 7, while on a
visit in Atlanta. The body was
taken to Montgomery for funer
al services and burial was in
Greenwood Cemetery.
Mr. Piha was a member of
Etz Ahazim Synagogue in Mont
gomery where all his family re
side. They include his wife; two
sons, Joseph and Solomon, a
daughter, Mrs. Bob Shemaria,
and four grand children.
Siena B. Collat
Siena Byck Collat of Savan
nah died September 11. He was
born in Savannah on October 4,
1889. He had been in the insur
ance business for 35 years.
Son of the late Isadore Collat
and Lilly Byck Collat, he is sur
vived by his wife, Mrs. Eliso
Pinkussohn Collat; he also leaves
two sons, Louis Byck Collat, Ro
bert Collat, both of Wilmington,
Del., one brother, Edgar Collat
of Milwaukee; three nieces and
one nephew.
BOSTON (JTA)—Ann Freud,
daughter of the late Sigmund
Freud, has been appointed con
sultant to the Harvard School of
Education's Laboratory of Hu
man Development.
PITTSBURGH (JTA)—City
Solocitor Ann X. Alpern, an ac
tive member of the local Jewish
community, this week was named
to head the list of ten Distin
guished Daughters of Pennsyl
vania.
