CHATTANOOGA—When the
Tennessee State Legislature
meets in 1953, Chattanooga’s
Ben Cash will again be answer
ing the roll calls.
Mr. Cash came through the
recent primary jn his city with
flying colors—topping a field of
eight candidates with 10,687
votes, several thousand ahead of
the nearest competition.
Since a victory in the primary
is tantamount to election win,
the Chattanooga Times has al
ready hailed Mr. Cash’s selection
at the head of the ticket as a
“tribute to his record of consci
entious service to all the people
of Hamilton County and to his
personal popularity among his
fellow citizens.”
Mr. Cash, who has been prom
inent in Jewish community
affairs here, has practiced law
munity here, has practiced law
in Chattanooga for more than 20
years. He obtained his education
in public schools here, Baylor
School, the University of Geor
gia and the Chattanooga College

section of the Bible called “The
Writings.”
Solomon, whose name means
peace, inherited the throne from
King David, his father, and pro
ceeded to build the Temple in
Jerusalem. On Sukkot, nearly
3,000 years ago, the Temple was
dedicated on Mt. Moriah, and the
Holy Ark with Moses Tablets of
Law was placed in its permanent
sanctuary.
The 15 pr. stamp, in green
and yellow, pictures figs, and its
inscription comes from 11:13—
“The fig tree putteth forth her
figs” ... On the violet, blue and
yellow 40 pr. stamp is a lily with
the inscription (11:1) “. . . the
lily of the valleys.”
On the 110 pr. stamp, in red
and grey, is a dove, with the in
scription (11:14) “Oh, my dove,
that art in the cleft of the rock
. . .” The 220 pr. stamp is in
ochre,- draw brown and green,
and shows a cluster of nuts. It
bears the caption (VI:11) “I
went down to the nut grove . . .”
The latter verse is an Israel
song, popular among young folk
dancers in Israel and this coun
try.

First American
Smallholders Colony
TEL AVIV (JTA)—The cor
nerstone of the first American
smallholders cooperative settle
ment was laid at a village near
Beer Tuviah where 70 American
Jewish families are expected to
settle in the near future. Par
ticipants in the dedication cere
monies included Minister of Fi
nance Levi Eshkol, who urged
American Jewish youths to come
to Israel and settle on the land.
Each house in the new settle
ment comes fully equipped with
kitchen utensils and a refriger
ator and consists of three-and-a-
half rooms. Settlers who will live
in the new colony are members
of Ha-Ikar Haoved, an American
group organized two years ago.
Each family will farm 30 dun
ams and will have a cow and
chickens.
Brandeis U.’s 5th
WALTHAM, MASS. (JTA)—
Brandeis University , opened its
fifth academic year this week
with the largest enrollment in its
history. The student body num
bers 750 including a freshmen
class of 281. Eighteen new tea
chers raise the faculty to 87.
