Southeastern Hadassah to Se nd
Large Delegation to Convention
Mrs. Morris Frank, presi
dent, will k;ad a delegation of
fourteen women from the South
eastern Region to the national
Hadassah Convention in Detroit
October 26-29.
Mrs. Frank will arrive on Oc
tober 22 for the national board
meeting. Joining her later will
(be Mrs. Philip Schwartz, Dr.
Rose Lahman, Mrs. David Alter-
man, Mrs. Jack Silver, Mrs.
George Alterman, Mrs. Charles
Weiner, Mrs. Alec Sherman and
Mrs. Elliot Rubin of Atlanta;
Mrs. Albert Tenenbaum from
Savannah; Mrs. Paul Ruben of
Augusta; Mrs. A. Zalin of Co
lumbia, Mrs. Leon Applebaum of
Charleston and Mrs. A. Roobin
of Macon.
In Detroit, the Southeastern
Region will join three thousand
other delegates and guests from
every section of the United Stat
es, in blueprinting an unprece
dented program of medical, so
cial welfare and educational as
sistance in Israel in 1958. The
lelegates will be asked to consid
er a budget of $9,000,000 — the
largest in Hadassah’s 40 year
history.
In announcing the delegation,

tional convention of Hadassah
will be held against a background
of continuing need in Israel.
While tremendous strides have
been mnde since its establish-

ment in 1948 in the fields of med
icine, vocational training, social
welfare and education, much
work remains to be done. We are
going to Detroit, proud of our
accomplishments and achieve
ments of recent years, but fully
conscious that a major portion
of our work still lies ahead of
us. I am confident that the deci
sions reached at the 38th annual
convention will be historic both
for Israel and the United
States.”

Dr. Sidney Marks, dynamic
national secretary of the Zionist
Organization of Americn, will be
the guest of the Atlanta Distrut
at its opening meeting at the
Mayfair Club on Wednesday, Oc
tober 22, at 8:15 p.m.
Marks has headed the execu
tive office of America’s largest
men’s Zionist organization since
1945 and is known as one of the
movement’s ablest organizers
and an eloquent speaker. He will

here Monday, Oct. 29, when the
group holds its first fall meeting.
Mrs. Klotz will review the
book, "This Way to Unity.” The

because of her dramatic ability

Atlantan Conducts
Services For 28,
Korean Bound
Lt. Eugene S. Asher, USMCR,
of Atlanta, conducted high holy-
day services for twenty-eight
Korean-bound Jewish troops
aboard the Military Sea Trans
port Service “Marine Serpent,”
September 19, 20, 21, 26, 28
and 29.
The services, held for the Ma
rine Corps’ 25th replacement
draft, were in observance of
Rosh Hashona.
Following concluding Yom
Kippur services, the Jewish per
sonnel broke fast together with
« feast in the officers ward room.
Among those attending serv
ices and the fast was Navy
Corpsman Allen Fine of Louis
ville, Ky.
DR. SIDNEY MARKS

new tasks and policies confront
ing the Z.O.A. in the immediate
future and will answer the many
questions concerning the func
tions of Zionism now that the
Jewish state is a reality. Coming
from one of the top men in the
organization, this will be of un
usual interest, according to Dr.
Sidney Janus, president.
Robert A. Peraky, Augusta at
torney and president of the
Southeastern Zionist Region,
will share the spotlight with Dr.
Marks. Roth leaders will be hon
ored at a dinner tendered them
by the Board of Directors imme
diately preceding the meeting.
An unusual treat will be a
dance presentation by the Atlan
ta Young Judaea group under
the direction of Alien Gilman,
who is an adviser to the A.J.C.
Club. This group was winner of
second place in the National Folk
Dance contest and has won wide
acclaim.

ON ‘NIGHT OF STARS’
NEW YORK (JTA) — Mar
garet Truman will participate in
the “Night of Stars,” New
York's annual all-star show at
Madison Square Garden for the
benefit of the United Jewish Ap
peal. Sylvan Otschal, chairman,
announced this week.
The president’s daughter will
serve as mistress of ceremonies
at the function on Nov. 24.

met recently at the home of Mrs.
Leonard Tanenbaum, with Mrs.
Jerome Shapiro as co-hostess.
The November meeting will be
held at the home of Mrs. James

opened an office for the practice
of optometry. Son of Mr. and

Herman Lebovitz has announced
the addition of three new staff

Norman Hofferman, star high
school athlete, athletic director.
Gary Shinbaum. a student at
the University of Chattanooga,
who has had wide experience in
camping and youth training, pro
gram director.

For Stevenson-Sparkman
This week saw the Stevenson-
Sparkman Campaign Headquar
ters banner go up at 330 West
Peachtree Street, and a group of
loyal Democrats roll up their
sleeves to carry Fulton County
for Stevenson and Sparkman.
“Our sole objective is to elect
Stevenson and Sparkman,”
Frank Morrison, chairman of the
group said. Mr. Morrison said
that though the group was orig
inally organized for Fulton
County that it now has been ex
tended to include all of the Fifth
District, and material requests
are coming in from all over the
State.
T. Elton Drake, chairman of
the City Democratic Committee,
was the first to call for action on
the part of the Democrats. He
was joined by Mrs. Robert Mac-
Dougal), only woman member of
the City Democratic Committee,
Frank Morrison and Frank
Brandon, local attorneys, and
others ready to go to work.
The headquarters building was
made possible through the gen
erosity of S. P. and J. Benamy,
and work got under way in the
hands of veteran campaigner,
Mrs. Marguerite Ewing Schott,
who is acting as co-ordinator of
speakers and radio.
Mrs. Frances Satterfield, for
mer head of research and mater
ials of the Women’s Division of
the Democratic National Com
mittee, is acting in the same ca
pacity in the Stevenson head
quarters.

To Lehman
NEW YORK (JTA) — Sen.
Herbert II. Lehman will receive
the Anti-Defamation League’s
American Democratic Legacy
Award for this year, the A.D.L.
has announced.
The award, which will be pre
sented at the opening of the
A.D.L.’s 39th annual meeting in
Chicago Oct. 22, was made for
the Senator’s work in behalf of
civil rights legislation. Previous
winners of the A.D.L. citation
were President Truman, Mrs.
Eleanor Roosevelt, Henry Ford
the second, and Charles E. Wil-
art, secretary of the State Dem
ocratic Committee, vice chair
men: S. P. Benamy, secretary,
and Dr. Jack Norris, treasurer.
Speakers may be secured by

Dr. Norris has called for con
tributions. This money is needed
to make it possible for Governor
Stevenson to continue to take his
message to the American people

To Install Officers
BRUNSWICK — Temple Beth
Tefilloh will install its new offi
cers at a dinner the evening of
Sunday, Oct. 19, at the Congre
gation’s Recreation Building.

liver the invocation. On the pro
gram will be Phil S. Ringel, out
going president, Samuel Altman,
incoming president, and several
of his staff members.

leader, Rabbi Spear has been
busy developing congregational
programs. He has also delivered
a sermon at the First Methodist
Church. On October 21, he is
scheduled to address the Men’s
Club of the Presbyterian Church
at St. Simon's Island.
