GETTING HEADY
Everybody had a job. Mother
washed and wrapped the china
and glassware. Father tied up
,t*ie packages. Judy ran errands.
Danny Mxrwed all the books in
Iwxes.
"He extra careful there, son,”
daddy warned. Danny had come
to the shelf that held the family
Bilble, the prayer books and the
Haggadaha. "You know it is a
ain to let a holy book drop to the
floor.”
“I’m watching out for them,”
Danny said.
Mother got out a large carton.
She padded the sides and bot
tom "This is for our most pre
cious possessions," she said.
“Hring me the candlesticks, Judy,
and the Hanukaih Menorah.”
These were wrapped in tissue
and parked. “Now our silver Kid-
dush cups, the Havdalah spice-
box, the challah trny . . .”
' “How about the Seder plate?”
asked J[udy.
“Yes,” mother said. “And
something flat to lay ou top—the
pictures from the living room.
You know, the etching of Moses,
and the one of the Hebrew Uni
versity. There’s room here in the
corner for our JNF box, too.”
The carton was filled. Daddy
tied it securely. “I’d better label
it,” he said. “What shall I
write?”
Mother thought a moment,
“Call it . . . call it Our Jewish
Home.”

•ON THE DOORSTEPS'
It was almost time to move,
and all the family was busy, but
they took time for a visit to Mr.
Schwartz’s bookstore.
“We are moving into a beauti
ful new home,” daddy told Mr.
Schwartz.
“Then you will want a beauti
ful new Mezuzah,” said the store
keeper, reaching into the display
case. He brought out a tray of
Mezuzahs of many sizes and ma
terials.
“I think,” said mother, “this
one." She selected a lovely silver
case. The delicate carving repre
sented two pillars of the Temple.
Iln the center was the cylinder
that contained the watchword of
Judaism, the Shema.
Daddy and Danny and Judy
agreed. It was just the right one.
"It was made in Jerusalem,”
Mr. Schwartz explained. “See,
on the back, the tiny etched let
ters—‘Yisrael’."
“There arc letters in that op
ening on the front, too," said
Judy. “What do they say?”
“They spell oht - the word
‘Shaddai’ or ‘Almighty’,” mother
told her. “In ancient times, hav-

posts of our homes was consider

STAFF OF LIFE
Moving day finally came. The
van was pulled up in front of the
house, and the moving men were
loading it with furniture.
“Come on, everyone,” daddy
called. “File into the car. We
want to get to the new house
first.”
“Do you have our new Mezu
zah?” Danny asked.
“Right here in my pocket,”
said daddy. "Ready to hang in
our doorway.”
Mother carried a paper bag.
“What’s in there?” asked Judy.
Mother opened the bag. There
were a challah and a jar of salt.
"These will be the first things
to be carried into our house,” she
said, “Bread and salt—the sym
bols of health and prosperity and
good luck in our new home.”

FORMING PROBLEM
STUDY GROUP
Do parents today have troube
with their children?
The Birmingham Jewish Cen
ter thinks they do and that if
enough parents got together for
a study group, some qf the prob
lems could be ironed out.
So mothers of the city are be
ing sought to enroll in a group
which would tackle such prob
lems as: what is father’s part in
discipline, how can you give a
child a chance to let off steam,
helping boys to be boys, girls to
be girls. Are you a parent that
can’t say no.
