By GERTRUDE KRICK
This is the time of the year
when winter-weary Atlantans note
with delight the first timid signs
that spring is around the corner.
Garden-wise observers report with
glee that hyacinths and crocuses
are nosing their way out of the
earth; while here and there, sprigs
of January jasmine are boldly put
ting out their first scattered gold
en-yellow blossoms.
While Atlanta gratefully watches
these signs of the coming of spring,
our thoughts turn to Israel and to
‘‘Jewish Arbor Day.” On “Tu Bis-
hevat,” the 15th day of the month
of Shevat, all Israel pauses to cel
ebrate the Holiday of Trees. Chil
dren throughout the land partici
pate in tree-planting ceremonies to
restore the land; to make of it
once again the historic “Land of
milk and honey.”
Back in Atlanta, and throughout
the U. S., Jewish communities will
celebrate similarly. At Shearith Is
rael Sunday School on Sunday,
February 1, following the showing
of an Israeli film, an outdoor as
sembly is being planned. On the
grounds in front of the building at
1140 University Drive, N. E., a
tree-planting ceremony will be
held, reminiscent of the Israeli
custom.
Rabbi Arnold Heisler will ad
dress the assembly. Selected chil
dren will set out trees to serve the
double purpose of commemorating
“Tu Bishevat” and beautifying
► Shearith Israel grounds.
It is good to welcome the spring

Sermon-Lectures
for Non-Jewish
Visitors at Temple
A series of three Friday evening
sermons at the Temple is being
devoted to “Prophets of Israel” by
Rabbi Jacob Rothschild as a study
course for a city-wide group at
the Peachtree Christian Church.
Invited to conduct the course,
Rabbi Rothschild asked the class
members instead to attend Friday
evening services, beginning Janu
ary 16, to hear his material. The
group will attend services again on
January 23 and on January 30.
Members of the congregation and
visitors are invited.
Simplified Plan
for Tax Returns
Taxpayers for 1953 will find it
simpler to file returns under the
new plan of consolidating city of
Atlanta, State and Fulton tax
units.
The new law which went into
effect on January 1 enables tax
payers to file only one return and
one Homestead Exemption Appli
cation with the Tax Receiving Di
vision of the County Tax Commis
sioners Office from January 1
through May 1, covering both City
of Atlanta, State and Fulton Coun
ty Requirements.
The plan will facilitate the fil
ing of returns according to Jason
A. Tuggle, former tax receiver,
who is now the first tax commis
sioner,. and T. Earl Suttles, former
tax collector, now the first chief
deputy tax commissioner.
