Don't Let the Stars in Your Eyes, Bob!
Painter Robert Bizinsky Tells Us
All About Becoming an Artist
This material appeared In the "Who’s Who in Brentwood
columns of the "riper,” a community weekly newspaper for the
neighborhood communities of Brentwood and Bel-Air in- Los
Angeles. Former Atlantan Bizinsky sometimes is modest to the
point of irking a searching reporter. He never told the inquiring
Brentwood reporter that his class includes such students as Mrs.
Dean Jaggers and Mrs. Robert Mltchum. —THE EDITOR

Mr. B. looked puzzled. “What do
you want to know?"
“What successes have you had?"
He reflected. “Well, I suppose
the only big stuff were two shows
I had in Paris which were very
well received by the critics. Oh—
and a couple of fellowships.
“What are you doing now?"
"Painting—mostly. Got an exhi
bition going down at the Frances
Lynch Gallery in the Statler Cen
ter. And I’m teaching a class out
here in Brentwood."
"Excellent, excellent!" we ex-
claimed, scribbling. “Helping build ; L®

Mr. Bizinsky looked uneasy, j

“Ah?" ||
"vveii, I really don’t think there’s ffr.
any such thing as modern art." He
considered our astonishment. "I
believe there’s such a thing as
contemporary painting, good and
bad—and there always has been.

He answered with no hesitation ■
“To me a good painting is one that ■
is a complete statement of the per- ■

“What kind of forces?"
“Fads’ for example. These can
often be masks of death for the
painter in which only the exterior 1
forms interested him rather than
the substance and marrow of a
painting. Yes,” he said, “that’s a!
good example—fads."
(Remember, all this in a South

We digested for a time, “Then
you dont like Picasso?’’
He looked shocked. “Oh, no! I
think he’s a genius”
“Well! Hmmm," Mr. Bizinsky
waited patiently while we wrote!
it all down. “Now, we’d like to
know how you got started being an
artist—how you chose your ca
