THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Friday, March 27, 1953
The coming Festival of Free
dom, Pesach (or Passover), holds
a place of honor in the Jewish
home everywhere. It reminds Jews
and all other peoples that human
history is replete with rebellions.
But in all human history, the care
fully planned and directed “gen
eral walkout" against Egyptian
slavery has never been surpassed.
Our ancestors did not wait for
liberation by any nation or group
of nations. They had no rescoursc
to so modern a device as The
United Nations. But they did have
Something very precious—the spir
it of freedom—within them. They
followed Moses, for 40 years
through the wilderness, because
they hod faith in freedom.
It is for that reason that this
time-honored Festival continues to
bring Joy into our homes years

after year, generations after gen
eration. It is at this Home Festi
val, with family and friends, and
"the stranger" in town, too, that
we sit around the Seder Table.
Every part of the Seder Service
is replete with symbolism of an
cient history and modern hope, ex
plained so that the very youngest
child might understand. Perhaps
even now there is developing for
future generations of our people
a new Festival—a festival which
will commemorate the return of
Israel’s people to the land of Israel.
Perhaps this new festival will
gather unto itself new symbols,
j But in the meantime, lei us not
I forget to remember “that once we
j were slaves in Egypt." Let us cel
ebrate that hard won freedom and
; remember the significance of the
j Seder Symbols in their ancient ap-
[ plication and meaning, in their
j modern importance for all of us.
Prepare the following for the
Seder, and emphasize the mean
ing:
AFIKOMEN: The Three Mat-
zoth, symbolizing "bread of af
fliction." Place these between the
folds of a large napkin at the head
of the table.
ROASTED LAMB BONE: This
symbolizes the paschal sacrifice of
j ancient days when each family
brought its offering. Brown on the
open flame a piece of lamb shank
or chicken leg bone.
ROASTED HARD COOKED
EGG: The EGG symbolizes LIFE,
the perpetuation of existence. It
is customary to place the cooked
egg against the open flame for a
minute or two before placing it on
the Seder Plate
BITTER HERBS: To symbolize
the bitterness of Israel’s bondage
in the land of Egypt. Mitzraiim,
use a piece of horseradish with the
green leaves or sprouts, place it
on the Seder Plate.
MORAR: Grated horseradish,
unflavored or seasoned, is placed
in a separate small dish. During
the Service, some of it is placed
between two pieces of Matzo and
passed to each member of the
family circle. This has been called
"The Hillcl Sandwich.”
CHAROSES: Combine chopped
nuts, grated apple, sugar, cinna
mon and a little wine for moist
ening. This symbolizes the morsel
of sweetness which lightens the
burden of unhappy memory.
HARD COOKED EGGS AND
SALT WATER: Place some hard
I cooked eggs, diced or sliced in one
j dish. In another bowl have some
] salted water. Or combine the eggs
j and water in a bowl to be passed
i to all at table.
GREENS AND SALT WATER:
! Any available greens such as pars-
j ley, watercress, chicory or shred-
, ded lettuce may be used to sym-
! bolize Hope and Redemption of
Life. Place a dish of salt water
j with some of the greens in or near
, it at each plate.
WINE: Serve in goblets which
i are refilled during the service four
times, symbolizing the four-fold
promise of Redemption.
ELIJAH’S CUP: Place a special ! j
goblet of wine on the table toward J
the end of the service. Open the 15
door and leave it ajar for the i | j
“coming of Elijah." the coming of j j
a more perfect world of justice j i
and Joy for all mankind—a beau- 1 j|
tiful symbol.
