time for him to die, he sefected a

very tired he said to the young
man, “It is time for me to leave

Do you remember that dramatic
moment in the second half of the
Seder service when someone at
the table—perhaps you—opens the
door for the invisible prophet Eli
jah? You can’t see him—but ev
eryone at the table says "Boruch
ha-bo,’ “Blessed be he who
comes." And if you watch every so
carefully, perhaps you’ll see the
wine in Elijah’s big cup quiver
just a little. Wc like to think that
Elijah the Prophet is really there
at our Seder'table, drinking the
wine with us.
Here are some other stories
about Elijah . . .
Many, many years ago, when the
Jewish people lived as the King
dom of Israel in the land of Can
aan, there was a cruel and selfish
king named Ahab. He ignored the
true God and let his foreign wife,
Jezebel, bring her foreign God,
Baal, into the kingdom.
There were many prophets,
however, who tried to tell the peo
ple about the evil King Ahab was
bringing to them. A prophet is a
wise man, who, it is believed, can
talk with God and who urges the
people to keep the laws of the
Lord.
One of these prophets was Eli
jah. One day he came to the pal
ace and told the king “You have
led the people of Israel to forsake
the God of their fathers. I tell you
that there shall be no rain,
even dew, in all Israel, until the
peopl6 return to the worship of
God.”
The king was angry and wanted
to arrest Elijah, but he had dis
appeared. The drought Elijah pre
dicted came to pass. No rain fell,
the grass grew dry, the crops fail
ed and all the people grew thirsty
and hungry. After many months,
when all the people were sick and
unhappy, Elijah once apain ap
peared before Ahab. He ordered:
“Gather all the people of Israel
on Mount Carmel. And tell the
prophets of Baal, the evil foreign
God, to come, too.”
Ahab was frightened and did as
Elijah asked. On the appointed
day, Elijah addressed all the peo
ple. “Let the prophets of Baal pre
pare the sacrifice to their God up
on his alter. And I will prepare
a sacrifice to the God off Israel.
Let no fire be placed under either
altar. Then let the prophets of
Baal pray to their God and I will
pray to the God of our fathers.
And the God who answers by
sending fire, let him be acknowl
edged as the God of Israel.” The
people listened and watched to see
what would happen. /
The prophets of Baal called up
on their God to send fire. But
nothing happened. Elijah called
out “Pray louder! Perhaps your
God is not home. Perhaps he has
gone for a walk. Or maybe he is
asleep and must be awakened.” So
the false prophets prayer louder,
they shouted and danced about.
But no fire came.
Then Elijah came before the
altar of God. And he prayed “O
God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob,
let it be known this day that thou
art God in Israel. Here me, O
God, that this people may know
Thou only art God, and that their
hearts may be turned back to
Thee.” Quick as lightning, a flash
of fire fell. And all the people saw,
and cried out “The God of our
fathers, He is our God.”
Then, as Elijah had prophesized,
| God was pleased and the rains
So the two prophets went to the
top of the mountain and waited.
Soon the skies darkened and thun
der was hearcjL Suddenly there
was a great flash of light and out
of the clouds came what appeared
to be a chariot of fire, drawn by
fiery horses. The wind swept the
chariot close to the peak and a
little gust of air picked Elijah up
and carried him to the chariot.

The wind blew and Elisha had
to hide his face to protect himself.
When he looked up again, Elijah
was gone, blown off in the heav-
eps in the fiery chariot.
An old belief tells us that when
it is time for the Messiah to come
and for all men to live together
again in peace and brotherhood,
Elijah will appear in person to
announce it. That is why, it is
