LIBERAL JUDAISM HAS AN ANNIVERSARY
Many congregations throughout the South are joining in the
national movement to observe the eightieth anniversary of the
organized founding of Reform Judaism.
The occasion is being used as a tribute to the memory of
Dr. Isaac Mayer Wise, who founded the Union of American He
brew Congregations and who is remembered not only because
'of the changes lie instituted in the synagogue ritual, but mainly
because of bis realistic approach to the problems of American
Jewry. His idea of American Judaism was based upon syntlie-
: izing the best in both Jewish tradition and in Western culture,
la addition, he largely organized both the Hebrew Union Col
lege in 1875, where so many of our superlative Reform rabbis
v/ere prepared for their spiritual leadership, and the Central Con
ference of American Rabbis.
Dr. Wise wi^s a colossus in American Judaism and bis in
fluence continues vigorous today.
We hope however that the eightieth anniversary of the or
ganized movement in this country will be utilized to reevaluate
the fundamentals of Liberal Judaism and to access the progress
lit has made to date, to give a keener understanding of what may
be expected in the future.

BIG CASH
Leaders of the Israel bond drive
are greatly worried over the fact
that $50,000,000 in pledges for
bond subscriptions have not been
redeemed yet. They make no sec
ret of the fact that of the total
of $160,000,000 subscribed to date,
only $110,000,000 was received in
cash. And there is also no secret
that loans were taken from banks
in anticipation that more cash
would be realized from bond sub
scriptions. Hence the leaders of
the Israel bond drive are deter
mined to make this month an
all-out collection effort to get all
the money still outstanding from
subscriptions.
A plan is being weighed for the
setting up of a branch organization
of the Israel bond drive to wage
a nationwide campaign to sell
bonds among non-Jews. There
have been some purchase of Is
rael bonds by non-Jewish banks
and insurance companies and even
hundreds of individual Christians,
but no direct effort has been made
to sell them. There are some in the
bond organization who believe
that tens of millions of Israel
bonds might be marketed among
non-Jews. They believe also that
the purchase of bonds by non-
Jews would be a healthy stimulus
to Jewish purchases.
GOLDA AT U.N.
Mrs. Golda Myerson, Israel’s La
bor Minister, came, spoke and
conquered at the United Nation’s
debate on the Communist anti-
Jewish policy. Her appearance
had a dramatic effect. Some del
egations, after listening to Mrs.
Myerson’s presentations, thought
it a very good idea to have women
as Cabinet members.
Incidentally, some were under
the mistaken impression that Mrs.
Myerson came to the United Na
tions session as permanent head
of the Israeli delegation. This was
not the case. The permanent head
is Ambassador Abba Eban. Mrs.
Myerson’s mission was limited to
the present session of the U. N.
Assembly, primarily to the debate
on the new Soviet anti-Jewish
policy. She will return to Israel
this week to resume her post as
Minister of Labor. Mr. Eban will
continue in his post of permanent
representative of Israel to the
United Nations, in addition to car
rying out his responsibilities in
Washington as Israel Ambassador.

Man is as much a mystery as

working recently, may produce
new revelations of great practical

WASHINGTON—
Important elements in Jewish
religious life have joined with
leaders of other faiths in oppos
ing Congressional investigations of
the McCarthy variety. In fact,
clergymen are sparking the first
major revolt against McCarthyism
since the assault on civil liberties
began in 1947.
The religious intercession came
about as an aftermath of an ad
dress at Atlantic City by Mrs. Ag
nes E. Meyer, a Republican, be
fore the American Association of
School Administrators. Mrs. Mey
er characterized McCaithy as a
“dangerous and ruthless demago
gue” who has accused innocent
people of Communism . . . stirred
up hatred and used every device
to destroy the confidence of Amer
icans in each other. Immediately,
insinuations against Mrs. Meyer's
loyalty were made by Senators
McCarthy and William E. Jenner

and Rep. Harold H. Velde. These
are the men who won the chair
manship of key investigating com
mittee through the Republican vic
tory last November.
Religious leaders, who had ob
served with alarm the audacity j
shown by the investigators since j
November, decided that things
were getting out of hand. They
vigorously counter-attacked. The
counter-attack centered first in the
District of Columbia because Mrs.
Meyer, who is wife of the pub
lisher of the Washington Post,
lives here. The clergymen were
familiar with her humanitarian
activities and knew that she was
a Communist. The very Rev.
Francis B. Sayre, Jr., dean of the
Washington Episcopal Cathedral;
Bishop G. Bromley Oxnam; Dr.
A. Powell Davies, a leader of the
Unitarian Church; Rabbi David H.
Panitz, of Washington’s Adas Is
rael Synagogue, and others
throughout the city spoke defiance
at McCarthy from the pulpit.
Meanwhile, the Central Confer
ence of American Rabbis adopted
a resolution that said Congression
al “witch hunts and spurious in
vestigations” threaten democratic
munist tcachers< “While we rec-
freedmon more than a few Com-
ognize that Communists are not fit
teachers for our children,” the res
olution said, “we are convinced
that the danger to our democratic
freedom” from “witch hunts” is
“even greater.”
“We have no need for the re
straints on freedom of speech con
tained in the Smith Act or in the
McCarran Internal Security Act.
We condemn the undemocratic
methods in Congressional investi
gations conduced by McCarthy
and Velde, and their state and lo
cal imitators. We indorse the vig
orous criticism of these methods
voiced by the National Council of
Churches and call upon other re
ligious bodies to join in the de
fense of our cherished American
institutions.” Thus read the reso
lutions approved by 700 Rabbis.
tn Washington, Rabbi Panitz
was shocked by Velde’s idea of in
vestigating religious leaders who
criticized McCarythyism to see if
they were Communists. The Rabbi
told his congregation that Velde’s
“conscience will one day have to
answer for the folly of equating
with Communism the desire to
further and implement the great
democratic ideals of America.” He
said, “Americans everywhere may
be aroused to the dangers inherent
in the proceedings of the Veldes
and the McCarthys and the Jen-
ners, and all Americans will be
afforded a new opportunity to
understand the vigorous opposition
of the churches and synagogues to
Communism and to the vicious
forces of godlessness.” Rabbi Pan
itz told how “it is the duty of
teachers of religion and morality
to comment upon the vital issues
of the day in the light of ethical
insights.”
Minority groups were cautioned
here by Charles M. LaFollette,
former chairman of the Subversive
Activities Control Board, that civil
liberties must be preserved “or
you won’t have civil rights very
long.” He issued this warning to
representatives of the major Jew
ish organizations and other groups
assembled here in a national con
ference on civil liberties.
La Follette compared American
“bookbumers” with Nazis and
gave many reasons to substantiate
his conclusions. He mentioned “the
sweep of American Fascism now
