ner of a $25 U. S. Savings Bond
and a chance to compete in the
Fifth District finals of the nation
al spelling bee on April 11.
All this because she has won
the championship of Fulton Coun
ty—the largest county in the en
tire state of Georgia.
Barbara is the daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Joseph K. Heyman. Sec
ond place went to David Krant,
12, a seventh grader at Rock
Springs School. He is the son of
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Krant.
The eightieth anniversary of the
birth of organized Reform Ju
daism in the United States will be
observed at the 42nd biennial as
sembly of the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations in New
York City from April 19 through
April 23.
In addition to marking the mile
stone of their own organization,
the congregational delegates, ex
pected to number almost 3000, will
partlcipate'in the first official com
memoration of the tercentenary of
Jewish settlement in America. At
a session devoted to the tercen
tenary, Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, no
ted Cleveland rabbi, will deliver
address entitled, “On the
Threshold of the Fourth Century.’’

tatives of the Turkish Govern
ment and military.
The 76-year-old apiritual leader
of Turkey’s Jews paid tribute to
the Turkish Government’s friend
ly attitude towards the Jews and
pledged to devote himself to the
service of his country and the
Jewish community. The great syn
agogue was packed and hundreds
of Jews stood outside in a pour
ing rain to watch the ceremony.

Abraham Mazer, noted Jewish
leader and and outstanding phil-1 4
anthropist, who died Mar. 27 at the
age of 77.
Mr. Mazer came to this country
from the Ukraine. He was a pen
niless youth of 17 when he arriv
ed. During his business career he
establish the Hudson Pulp and
Paper Corporation, leading paper
products manufacturers, whose
plants in Florida, Vermont and
Philadelphia now employ 3,000
persons.
