Special Gifts Group Will Hear
Dr. Eskol at W ednesday Lunch
Alisa Klausner Eskol, noted lec
turer and writer from Israel,
whose appearance in the United
States and Canada to * tell her
country’s story earned her the
reputation of being "Israel’s most
captivating good-will ambassa
dor," will speak in Atlanta Wed
nesday, Apr. 26.
She will talk before a luncheon
sponsored by the Special Gifts
group of the Women’s Division of
the Atlanta Jewish Welfare Fund
at the Mayfair Club. Co-chairmen
of the Special Gifts group are

Holland, Mrs. Stanford Makover, '
Mrs. J. M. Rosenfeld and Mrs. |
Philip E. Shulhafer.
On a recent fourth month visit j
to Israel, Dr. Eskol surveyed pres
ent conditions and spent much
time with the new immigrants,
meeting as well with government
and military officials.
As a member of Israel’s under
ground,-she fought in her coun
try’s struggle for freedom. During
World War II, she lectured on Is
rael before Allied troops visiting
the country, in addition to her ac
tivities as teacher, writer and far
mer.
Dr. Eskol has personally seen
and participated in every step of
the country's rise to independent
statehood. Born in Jerusalem of
parents who were pioneers and
settlers, her education started in
a kindergarten on the sand dunes
of Tel Aviv. It culminated in her
being the first woman to receive
• Ph.D. degree in Philosophy
from the Hebrew University in
Jerusalem.

cy training institute for delegates
abroad, she came to America as
research assistant for the Ameri
can Zionist Emergency Council.
As a consultant for several na
tional organizations and as a mem
ber of the Speakers Research Com
mittee of the United Nations, she
has lectured on Middle East and
Israel affairs before the American
public.
As a writer, Dr. Eskol has con
tributed numerous articles and
short stories to the press of Israel,
describing life in Israel and Amer
ica. Her repeated country-wide
lecture tours, radio and television
appearances have carried her more
than 400,000 miles to present her
fascinating report on Israel to col
leges, churches, mass meetings,
civic groups and many other or
ganizations.
Youth Division Report
Meeting For Next Thursday
Atlanta’s Jewish Community
Center will be the scene of the
first report meeting of the Youth
Division of the 1953 Welfare Fund
campaign at 7:30 p.m. Thursday,
April 30, it was announced by
Peggy Lichtenstein and Alvin Sie
gel, co-chairmen of the division.
At a meeting bn Apr. 16, some 40
members of the Youth Division,
including the leaders and colonels,
met to receive campaign instruc
tions and card assignments.
They heard Irving Kaler in a
stirring address on what giving
does for the giver and the impor
tance of the participation of youth
in the community, as well as what
this participation means to the
leadership of the community.
Peggy Lichtenstein, Alvin Siegel,
Deedee Levy and David Gracer are
among the sparkplugs of the Youth
Division's campaign. The young
sters are displaying a spirit that
has the adult community's eyes
open in admiration.

ward area of the world.
With the floral token and on
behalf of the citizens of Georgia,
the governor expressed his con
gratulations and good will of his
State toward the young democracy
of Israel. On the occasion of Is
rael’s fifth anniversary he con
veyed good wishes for her well
being and prosperity and the sin
cere hope for peace with her
neighbors.
Similar presentations of official
State flowers were made in all
the 48 states. As in the case of the
Georgia State bouquet, the flow
ers were flown to New York,
where they were arranged with
the bouquets of the 48 states and
presented by Hadassah at the In
ternational Airport to Mrs. Abba
Eban, wife of the Israel Ambas
sador to the United States, who
received this~"gift on behalf of the
State of Israel. Then relayed to
the Israel airline El Al, this beau
tiful and meaningful token was
flown to Israel. There, a Hadassah
representative presented the 48
American flowers in a mammoth
bouquet to the wife of the Prime
Minister of Israel, Mrs. David Ben
Gurion with the deep-felt good
wishes of the Hadassah member
ship of every state of the union.

ernor Talmadge’s office, were the
following leaders of Hadassah:

sah, who was visiting in Atlanta.

the five groups comprising the At

Dr. Rose A. Lahman, who re
ceived an emergency call from the
hospital, .while the delegation was
waiting for the Governor to re
ceive them, was not photographed.
Camp Carlyle
Now Taking
Reservations
Meeting the needs of every
child is the objective of Camp
Carlyle, now accepting reserva
tions for the forthcoming summer
season, at Hendersonville.
Set amid the Blue Ridge Moun
tains—some of the finest scenery
in the world—Camp Carlyle is
close to Pisgah National Park,
with its Chimney Rock and other
attractions the object of hikes and
visits by Camp Carlyle boys and
girls, according to Mrs. Jean Arn
old, owner.

Woodward High School, Cincin
nati, will again serve as camp di
rector. Mr. Moeller has headed
the counsellors for the last five
years.
The camp program includes all
phases of athletics and leisure and
cultural type recreation, besides
Friday evening services. Each cab
in has two separate bath and toilet
facilities.

Arnold said. We have a wonderful
all-round type camp with special
attention to health and safety.
