Miriam’s
Stories for
Our Boys
and Girls
Hello, Boys and Girls:
-Our friends, Danny and Judy,
are with us today. Perhaps you
can learn something about your
selves by reading their story.

Honor Thy Neighbors
.It was Saturday afternoon. Al
most everyone in the neighborhood
was sitting on their front steps,
enjoying the fine spring breeze.
Mother sat in her rocking chair.
Daddy’s face was buried in a
book, but if you looked closely
you could see he was really tak
ing a Sabbath nap.
Suddenly, the peace was dis
turbed. Danny and Judy came
running around the corner of the
house, laughing and calling to each
other. When they saw mother and
daddy, they stopped and giggled.
Danny whispered in Judy’s ear,
and Judy whispered in Danny’s
ear.
Mother thought it was a new
game. “Is it fun?” she asked. “It
is a secret?”
“Wait ’til you hear,” Danny
said. “We went around the corner,
where the empty house is, and the
new people have some of their
things in the house already, and
we walked in the backdoor . . .”
Judy carried on. “And we look
ed at the rooms, and the color is
terrible, and the furniture is so
funny-looking . . .’’ She broke out
into giggles again.
But mother didn’t seem to think
it was so funny. “Were the new
neighbors there?” she asked.
“No,” answered Danny
“Did anyone invite you into
the house?” mother asked.
“No,” admitted Judy.
“Then what business did you
have walking in? And what right
have you to criticize other peo
ple’s taste? And what do you mean

by carrying tales about a private
house all over the neighborhood?"
Mother’s face was stern.
Danny looked at Judy. Judy
looked at Danny. They hadn’t in
tended to be mean. They just
didn’t think carefully.
Daddy had awakened and was
listening. “Do you know what the
Bible says about respecting your
neighbors?’ ’ daddy said. “This
morning, at the synagogue, I heard
the rabbi read from the Torah . .
“Thou shalt not go up and dowr
as a tale-bearer among thy peo
ple” . . . and Thou shalt in no
way rebuke thy neighbor’.’’
“We’re sorry,” Danny said. “We
just thought we were having fun.”
“I’m sure you’re sorry,” mother
told the children. “But there are
many, many ways for you to have
fun without hurting other people.
Go now, and play.”
* * *
I hope none of you ever have
“fun” at the expense of your
friends or neighbors, boys and
girls.
If you go to the synagogue this
Sabbath, you will hear the Bible
passages that daddy told about.
They are from a famous part of
the Torah known as the “Code of
Holiness," in which God tells the
Jewish people how they should
behave themselves and toward
each other. It’s the basis for many
of the 1 wisest laws of modern
times.
If you would like to read it for
yourself, you .will find it in the
19th Chapt/r of the Book of Le
viticus in the Bible.
. Here are some of the other
things the Code of Holiness tells
us:
“Ye shall not steal nor deal
falsely nor lie to one another.”
“Ye shall not profane the name
of thy God ”
“Thou shalt not hate thy broth
er in thy heart.”
“Thou shalt not bear any grudge
against the children of thy people,
but thou shalt love thy neighbor
as thyself.”
“Thou shalt honor the face of
the old man.”
“The stranger that dwelleth with
you shall be unto you as one born
among you, and thou shalt love
him as thyself.”
Good things to remember, aren’t
they, boys and girls?
Your friend, MIRIAM
Of course you have heard about

easy to prepare in advance, very
inexpensive if you're watching
your food bydget, and just chock
ful of essential vitamins. It is
called SOUFFLE SALAD and
here’s how it’s made:
Vegetable Souffle Salad
1 package lemon or lime flavored
gelatin
1 cup hot water
% cup cold water
1 M tablespoons vinegar
Mi cup thick mayonnaise
% teaspoon salt
1/3 cup each, shredded raw car
rot, celery, green pepper
1/3 cup each, finely diced or
chopped cauliflower, spinach,
lettuce or watercress
1 tablespoon finely chopped green
onions, optional
Salad greens for garnish
Green or black olives, pickle
slices, red radish slices
Dissolve the gelatin in hot water.
Add cold water, vinegar, mayon
naise and salt, stirring until
smooth. Beat with a rotary beater
and turn into your refrigerator
deep ice cube tray. This mixture
should be left in the freezing unit
until 15 to 20 minutes or until
firm about one inch around the
edges but soft in the center. Turn
into a mixing bowl and beat with
a rotary beater until fluffy. Fold
in the vegetables. Turn the mix
ture into a 1-quart mold or 6 indi

ed in cold water or lightly greased
with salad oil. Chill in the refrig

and garnishing. Serves 6.
Variation: Substitute well drain
ed canned crushed pineapple for
shredded celery and use a grated
cucumber instead of green pep
per. This makes a most attractive
salad when prepared in individual
molds and served on a bed of
thinly sliced.unpared cucumber.
