Stories for
Our Boys
and Girls
Hello. Boys and Girls:
The tenements teem with youth
Are you busy planning a special
surprise for your mothers for this
Sunday? It’s Mother’s Day, you
know. Mother’s Day is a holiday
that began in America, but it is
j ret really a new idea to Jewish
families.
Jewish tradition has always
'treated women, particularly
others, with great respect. One
: c ' the Ten Commandments tells I
to "Honor thy father and thy The sun has set: but in her eyes
1 other.’’ At Passover, when we j Are Sabbath stars that never
ant the "Echoed Mi Yodea” from
e Haggadah, we tell you the
‘ Four Mothers in Israel”—Sarah,
I; ichel, Rebecca and Leah.
Resound with children of her kin;
But she stands silent, Sabbath
eyed,
Her quiet soul within.
When after days of fruitless toil
There comes the hope of Sabbath
night.
Their little room and scanty meal
She sanctifies with light.
Many Jewish authors have writ-
I fen about mothers. Here is a poem,
I . grown-up poem, that I think
I you will like. It tells how a Jewish
I mother, even though her home is
I very plain and modest, becomes
I s Princess when the Sabbath
I comes.

Perhaps you have been able to
save money out of your allowance
and are going to buy a little gift
for your mother. But there are
many other ways to tell mother
how much you appreciate her.
Our friends Judy and Danny
have planned a big surprise for
their mother. With father’s help,
they’re going to get up early on
Sunday morning and prepare a
wonderful breakfast. When it's all
done, they’ll wake mother and in
vite her to be their guest at the
breakfast table.
Here’s what they’re going to
have—Judy will squeeze orange
juice and put it into the refriger
ator to chill. She’ll decorate each
glass with half of a fresh straw
berry or a sliver of orange.
Then she’ll set the table. Daddy
will help her spread out a fresh
bright cloth. At each place she’ll
put a folded napkin, a breakfast-
size plate, a juice glass, a fork and
spoon, cups and saucers for moth
er and daddy and milk glasses for
herself and Danny. In the center,
she’ll put sugar, cream, butter and
syrup or jam (with a plate under
neath to catch the "drips”).
Meanwhile, Danny will have
taken the pancake mix from the
shelf and stirred into it the proper
amount of milk. The recipe on the
package will tell him just how.
Perhaps daddy will prepare cof
fee. Or Danny could boil a kettle
of water for instant coffee.
Danny will get out the griddle,
spread a bit of butter on it, and
put it on the stove. Daddy will
supervise the fire. While the grid
dle is heating, it will be time to
waken mother.
By the time she is washed and
ready for breakfast, the juice will
be poured, the pancakes hot and
tempting, the coffee /eady. And
what a wonderful surprise for
mother!
You could do the same at your
house. Perhaps you like cereal or
eggs for breakfast. Or maybe dad
dy would go to the bakery and
bring home hot rolls which you
can serve with butter and cream
cheese.
This is just one suggestion for a
way to celebrate Mother’s Day.
I’m sure you can think of others.
Above all, be considerate and do
what mother tells you, not just on
Mother’s Day, but every day! Re
member to "Honor thy mother."
Your friend, MIRIAM.

dowed by an anonymous donor
for use at the Veterans Hospital,
it was announced by Abe Gold
berg, chairman of B’nai B’rith vet
eran's affairs committee, this
week.
In making this announcement at
the Veterans Hospital, Mr. Gold
berg stated that this was one of
the first hospitals to establish a
fund for “emergencies” without
any strings attached.
Said Mr. Goldberg, “Many things
happen concerning our patients
for which we do not have facili
ties or funds available in emer
gencies. An anonymous donor has
offered to deposit $72 in the bank
every month to take care of emer
gencies which concern a hospital
ized veteran and which cannot be
handled through VA channels. An
additional $100 has been deposited
in the event small additional
amounts are needed.”
Mrs. Irvine Morris of the Amer
ican Red Cross and Abe Goldberg
of B’nai B'rith will administer the
funds which are to be used with
out “strings,” “red tape*’ or dis
crimination of any kind.
Mrs. Morris stated that the pro
fessional staff of the hospital will
be asked to help determine wheth
er or not an emergency exists.
The patient is under no obligation
to return any emergency loan or
gift, but can reimburse the Fund
if he so desires.
