53rd annual convention of the
Rabbinical Assembly of America
which represents 500 spiritual

More than 350 Reform rabbis ar

Pearson Says
Silver
Investigated
WASHINGTON (JTA)—Colum
nist Drew Pearson recently charg
ed in a radio newscast that Con
gressmen are investigating the
loyalty of Rabbi Abba Hillel Sil
ver.
“Congressmen hunting for Com
munists in the clergy have gone
so far as to investigate the loyalty
of two of the three ministers who
offered prayers at President Eis
enhower’s inauguration,” Mr.
Pearson said. “They are Bishop
Henry Knox Sherrill, Episcopalian,
and Rabbi Hillel Silver, of Cleve
land, both distinguished Ameri
cans, loyal to their God and their
country.”
“However,” continued Mr. Pear
son, “suspicious Congressmen dis
covered that Bishop Sherrill many
years ago sponsored the American-
Soviet Friendship Council and
Rabbi Silver had signed one of the
early petitions on behalf of Julius
and Ethel Rosenberg.” Mr. Pear
son pointed out that “actually both
ministers have been leaders in the
fight against Communism.”
(Reached by the JTA at his
home in Cleveland, Rabbi Silver
said that his stand on the Rosen
berg case is well known and was
published in the press. He stated
that he accepts the judgment of
the Rosenberg’s guilt, but thinks
that the death sentence is too se
vere a punishment in peace time.)

No Priority for Arabs
In Arms, Says U. S.
FRANKFURT (JTA) — Profes
sor Buber, the noted Jewish think
er who has just arrived in Ger
many for an extended lecture tour,
will receive the 1953 “Peace Prize
of the German Book Trade,” it is
announced here.
First winner of the $2,500 prize,
1950, was Jewish author and
pacifist Max Tau. In 1951 it was
awarded to Albert Schweitzer and
last year to Catholic moral philos
opher Romano Guardini. Profes
sor Buber will accept the prize at
a ceremony in Frankfurt’s secul

LONDON (JTA)—The Council
of the Anglo-Jewish Association
at a meeting here went on record
as opposed to the establishment of
a permanent organization compe
tent to speak for world Jewry. The
Council called such an action a
“retrograde step.”
TEL AVIV (JTA)—Dr. Nahum
Goldmnn, who arrived here June
22, revealed that the Jewish or
ganizations now engaged in rep
arations talks with Austria will
claim from the Austrian Govern

Jews under the Nazi regime.
WASHINGTON (JTA) — High
State Department officials today
indicated that Arab states will re
ceive no priority over Israel in any
granting of arms by the United
States to countries in the Near
East.
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency
learned today that plans for a
Middle East Defense Command
were shelved and individual ar
rangements with separate Arab
states and Israel were decided up
on at a meeting held in the State
Department on June 16. Officials
of the Defense Department par
ticipated.
A State Department official, who
could not be quoted directly, today
called attention to the June 1
speech by Secretary of State John
Foster Dulles as the key to what
Israel should expect the arms pol
icy to be. Mr. Dulles said in this
speech that “while awaiting the
formal creation of a security asso
ciation, the United States can use
fully help strengthen the inter-re
lated defense of those countries
which want strength, not as against
each other or the West, but to re
sist a common threat to all free
nations.”
The Department is now deciding
on how best to implement the for
mula supplied by Mr. Dulles in his
speech. It has definitely been de
cided that assurances will be re
quired that all arms must be used
defensively, Department officials
said.
(The Associated Press reported
from Washington that in order to
qualify for gift American weapons,
the Middle East nations must sign
pledges they will back the Western
countries in the East-West strug
gle. They must agree to accept a
small American military mission
which will teach the local armed
forces how to use American wea
pons and provide adequate public
ity for the operation.)

WASHINGTON—Emergency re
lief funds were sent by B’nai B’rith

Disaster victims in Worcester,
Mass., are receiving aid from a
group headed by Leo Fischer, Pre
sident of the Worcester Lodge. In
Flint, Michigan, an active part in
relief assistance is being taken by
Arthur L,Perlmutter, President of
the Flint Lodge. Funds in Waco,
Texas, where the Jewish commun
ity of about 1400 was especially
hard hit, are being expended under
the direction of David H. White,
of Houston, a member of the na
tional Board of Governors of B’nai
B’rith.
A special appropriation of $1,000
was also made for relief of flood
victims in Sioux City, Iowa, where
the rampaging Missouri River left
scores homeless earlier this month.
Dr. Abe Greenberg, of Omaha,
Neb., a member of the national
Board of Govenors, heads the B’nai
B’rith relief Committee in this re
gion.
Describing the situation in Waco,
David H. White stated that the tor
nado hit the very heart of town,
wiping out many small merchants.
He praised the spirit of self-help
shown by the citizens. “The com
munity, especially the leadership,
is hopeful that they will be able
to manage the situation without
too much call to others,” he said.
Mr. White, who is publisher of
the Houston Jewish Herald Voice,
also reported that the Waco B’nai
B’rith Lodge had contributed funds
toward the repair of the damaged
Negro Center and toward the re
building of the Lutheran Church
School, which was wrecked by the
high winds. He was accompanied
on his tour of the disaster area by
Herbert Levy, President of the
Texas B’nai B’rith Association, and

Montreal Court
Fines Synagogue
For Holding Classes
MONTREAL (JTA)—A Mon
treal court has fined a synagogue
for holding classes in the building
without previously obtaining a
permit to operate a school. The
case arises from the attempts of
people in various outlying areas
of Montreal to prevent new syn
agogues from conducting religious
classes and services in a manner
which they find disturbing.
The court decided that the de
fendant congregation, Chaside
Belz Umachzike Hadac, had been
transformed from a synagogue in
to “a synagogue and school for
children.” The court fined the con
gregation $25 and imposed a sim
ilar fine for every day that the
school continues to operate in vio
lation of city ordinances. The con
gregants number about 50 or 60
recent immigrants, most of whom
are survivors of concentration
camps.
Jews Not Barred
By Parley Hotel
Says Churchill
LONDON (JTA)—Prime Min
ister Sir Winston Churchill told
the House of Commons this week
that he had been “assured” that
the Mid-Ocean Club at Bermuda
where he will confer with Presi
dent Eisenhower and a French
Government representative late
this month does not bar Jewish
guests, as charged by Ian Mikardo,
Labor Memt>er of Parliament. Mr.
Mikardo had asked that the site of
the three-power meeting be
changed.
Mr. Mikardo declared that he had
made his charges on the basis of
carefully examined evidence in
cluding an affidavit to the effect
that the New York representative
of the Mid-Ocean Club had stated
that Jewish people were not ac
ceptable as guests, and asked Sir
Winston to examine this evidence.
Sir Winston replied: “My infor
mation is to the contrary, but I will
gladly accept any additional con
tribution to the evidence.”
A Jewish Laborite, Sidney Sil
verman, rose to ask the Prime
Minister, if he were not “com
pletely satisfied that Mr. Mikardo
is wrong,” would at least take
steps to avoid embarrassing inci
dents by omitting Lord Reading,
a Jew and Under Secretary of
State fpr Foreign Affairs, from the
delegation to the Bermuda parley.
To this Sir Winston retorted angri
ly: “I don’t see the point of that.
We have happily got well above
senseless and malignant anti-Sem
itism in this country. Why make
such a point?"
Reuters News Agency this week
quoted the president of the Mid-
Ocean Club of Bermuda in a de
nial of charges that the club bars
Jews from membership. The dis
patch from Bermuda quoted Sir
Howard Trott, head of the club as
sayiag that the club had Jewish
members and that it barred Jews
and non-Jews alike who were not
“satisfactory.”
Bias Beachhead
MIAMI (JTA)—An investigation
was being made this week of the
transmission through the mails of
quantities of anti-Semitic propa
ganda addressed to residents of
this city.
The material, postmarked in
Jacksonville, included leaflets
which carried Post Office box
numbers in Atlanta and Birming
ham. It bore the name of the
“Christian Anti-Jewish Party” and
called for enrolment in the organ
ization to “free America from the
Jews” and to "destroy Commun
ism.” The “party” is run by Jesse
B. Stoner, a former Klan official,
and has failed to attract much
support. ‘
