Jewish settlement in what is
now the United States began three
centuries ago when refugees from
the persecution of the Inquisition
in Brazil braved the terror of the
unknown to seek freedom of wor
ship in the wilderness of new
world. The earliest pioneers
reached the untamed shores of the
Atlantic coast in 1654 and pre
parations are now underway for
nationwide observance of the ter
centenary of their arrival.
Partly in preparation for this
observation, but more funda
mentally to push back the fronti
ers of knowledge of the American
Jewish past, an expedition of
scholars, led by Dr. Jacob R. Mar
cus, director of the American
Jewish Archives, last summer
retraced the route of those first

ploration of synagogues, ceme
teries, libraries and the holdings of
private collectors in several coun
tries of the West Indies yielded a
rich harvest of significant histori
cal documents. Over 5,000 pages
of manuscript material, including
a number of two-hundred-year-
old letters linking the Jews of the
West Indies with the Jews of
America, were unearthed.
In the Barbados, the expedition
made several interesting finds.
The old Spanish-Portugese con
gregation, “The Dispersed Ones of
Israel,” as it called itself, had long
disappeared. But much of the
cemetery remains, and there the
scholars found a tombstone dated
1672, making the final resting
| place of the first Jew known to
j have come to Virginia. That state’s
! colonial records show that Moses
i Nehemiah engaged in litigation in
York County, Virginia, in 1658. He
j was probably a Jew from Bar-
: bados, to which he returned and
where he died.
Nearby and in the same ceme-
J tery, the scholars found a cracked
and crumbling monument to the j 2
first rabbi who ever officiated in H
that capacity in the United States, j » •
, This was Raphael Haim Isaac | --
; Carigal, a Hebron rabbi, who
I came to America in 1773 seeking ?
funds. He preached in the New- *
port synagogue to a large audience »
which included Erza Stiles, a «
Christian clergyman who later be- ] 2
came president of Yale College.
Among the worshippers for
whom Carigal preached in New
port was his friend, Aaron Lopez,
president of the Newport congre
gation. The latter was the most
successful merchant-s h i p p e r in
town and one of the leaders of the
New England fishing, whaling,
and candle industry.
One of the most interesting
items brought back by the expedi
tion consists of a copy of a paint
ing of Rabbi David Cardoze
(1824-1914) and his wife of St.
Thomas, Virgin Islands. Although j
the portraits are not signed, they
are, according to family tradition,;
the work of a then young St.:
Thomas painter, Camille Pissarro, I
who later became one of the
founders of French Impressionism.
Many of the old records which
the expedition was able to locate
