Our readers doubtlessly will
join in welcoming Anita Engle
back to our columns after a
year’s absence. We’ve missed
her timely and warm com
ment on family life in Israel.
She is not a visiting commen
tator objectively viewing the
country—but an actual resi
dent reporting her experi
ences and observations.

You can congratulate me folks.
From now on when you see the
heading “At Home in Israel with

means exactly what it says. And

own home. Not just a flat, mind
you, but a home of our own, with
three and a half rooms, an attic,
(housewife’s delight!) and an acre
of land.
That would j ”
be pretty good i
going for a'

where, after!
only four and a j
half years in a
country. But in
Israel, it
amounts to a
major miracle.
Oddly enough, we slid rather than
walked into this situation.
Whn we were told that we had
to leave our school-owned flat in
Haifa, we half-heartedly began to
put our names down for every
thing, even the most far-fetched
schemes, such as a house in Kiryat
Amal, the beautifully-situated
mountain resort three-quarters of
an hour from Haifa. Who could
live outside Haifa, we asked, and
where would we get the If2.70?
We comfortably did nothing for
two years. At least, I was com
fortable, because I knew we
hadn’t a chance of raising the
phenomenal sums required for
key money, while my husband
was uncomfortable, for the same
reason. One day we got a letter
saying that the Kiryat Amal house
was almost finished. If 1,500 down
please, and another seven hundred
in a few months. We hurried
about and got loans and scraped
up the money. We didn’t mean to
keep the place, of course, but
thought only of disposing of it,
and thus raising the key money
for a rented flat in Haifa. The
shikun was a very preferential
Histadruth one, so the house was
a good investment. The price, in
cidentally, had gone up If2,000 in
the two years, but somehow If4-
700 didn’t seem any worse than
the previous amount, which had
also been out of reach.
Anyway, we went out to see the
place and fell in love with it. The
neighborhood was a dream and
the little house was a honey. It
was one room too small for our
family of four, complete with
separate libraries, desks, hobbies.
This made it easier to renounce,
although on the day that my hus
band got the key, he was terribly
depressed. “I’ve waited all my life
for a home of my own,” he
brooded, “and now that I have
one, I can’t keep it!”
We began to look for flats to
rent in Haifa. Agents told us that
for If6,000 (the amount we hoped
to realize on the house), we might
induce a landlord to give us the
privilege of paying him a monthly
rental on a 3-room flat.
“What about the key money if
we want to leave the flat?” I
asked. “Of course,” I heard with
shock, “If2,000 remains with the
landlord!” “Not If2,000 of my
hard-borrowed money,” I said,
and thereupon decided that in
stead of spending that money
(which we didn’t have) on a land
lord (who didn’t exist) we would
use it to build a third room onto
the little Kiryat Amal Cinderella
and turn her into our fairy prin
cess. It took us a year to raise the
necessary money, and incidentally
I discovered an agreeable and
remunerative skill—that of teach
ing English.
Now we’re here, to everyone’s
astonishment (and our own), and
we’ve never felt happier nor more
at home in our lives.
That’s the sort of New Year I
want to wish you all, and for all
Jewish people, wherever they may
be—happiness in your own home,
or Homeland, in the coming year.
Shalom, v’ L’hitraot.
