Rosh Hashonah Is a thing of
spiritual stock taking in Israel,
but it is also a time of taking stock
of the land of Israel. The press of
Israel blossoms forth in large edi
tions with surveys of the year past
and prospects for the new year.
The past year has been one of
continued austerity in Israel, but
the shining through of the sun in
many of the dark spots is a har

products ranging all the way from

to womens wear and pencils.
The great snag in the develop
ment of Israel as the Israeli Min
ister of Finance, Levi Eshkol re
cently pointed out is simply the
want of capital. In the days of the
Mandate, quite a large proportion
of Jewish immigrants came with
capital of their own. The hun
dreds of thousands who have
'ome in since the establishment of
the State were penniless. This
lack as Mr. Eshkol pointed out,
must be filled now by Israel
oonds.
The-past year has been hearten-

minerals in the Negev and else
where. Among the minerals now
-mown to be found in the country
ire phosphates, copper, feldspar,
Uuminum, iron, gypsum, and
