Spirit of Strength
By RABBI EMANUEL FELDMAN
Beth Jacob Synagogue, Atlanta, Ga.
Beth Jacob Synagogue, Atl., Ga.
The age in which we live can
he likened to a pendulum. One
day the world swings toward
the zenith of hope, and we arc
glad; on the next, it sways hack
toward the nadir of despair, and
we grow sad. And, clinging per
ilously to the pendulum, we look
in fear to its future movements,
unable to control or to guide its
monotonous sway. We seek
something to grasp when the
pendulum reaches its zenith, to
hold it there forever.
Rosh Uashonah is that solid-
of calm faith, its lofty idea of
purification of the self, offer us
a real hold in a world of intangi
bles, a hold with winch to con
trol our lives. At this holiday
season we swing toward the
heights of joy and hope. Let us
keep it there. We can, if we
will only reach out and grasp
the solid mountain of faith. “Let
the joy of the Lord be your
stronghold,” says Nehemiah.
By living every day of the
year with this Rosh Hashonah
spirit of strength, ours will sure
ly he a “Shanah Tovah”—a year
it y which we seek, its message] of health and peace for all.
