1y heartfelt thanks again to all you
wonderful people of Atlanta, Birmingham,
Macon and the many other Southeastern
pities who so unselfishly responded to a man
lying critically injured in an Atlanta hospital.
''our courtesy, hospitality and devotion to
myself—a stranger working in your midst—
and to my mother, Mrs. Ruben Epstein,
will always be recalled as the
response most befitting the best in
"Yiddish Herfzer."
My Mother and Dad, my Brother David and
Sister Clara, all join me in wishing all our
friends a happy and healthful
Rosh Hashonah—this year and
the years to come.

Letter to the Editor—
(Continued from page 10)
five Jewish brides have to be mar
ried off.
"Saturday night after ‘Hav-
dolah,’ a meeting was called by
the 'Chevra Kadisha,’ Chevra
‘Gimilis Chosudim,’ Chevra *Ti-
lim,’ Chevra ‘Mishnoias,’ Chevra
Moishev Zikainem. During the day
new ‘C h e v r a s’ (organizations)
were formed with names like
Chevra ‘Haehnoosas Kalo,’ ‘Chev
ra Molbish Arearim,’ ‘Chevra Zoi-
kei Kafoofim,’ ‘Chevra Motear
Osearim,’ ‘Chevra Poikaoch Eavr
im.’
"Each organization elected a
president, a vice-president, and a
treasurer, so they could partake
in the great division of wealth.
"Sunday morning all the offi
cers from the various ‘Chevras’
came to Moishi Rapaport and ask
ed him about the money. ‘How
much?' asked the millionaire, ‘is
your givear worth?’
“One said, ‘Fifty thousand;’ one
said, ‘Eighty thousand,’ and some
said, ‘Over one hundred thousand
Rubles.’
“ ‘I will have to know exactly
the correct amount so that I can
pay off my donation,’ replied Rob
Moishi. ‘I want an accountant to
examine his books.’
“So they came to the ‘Shutisher
givear’’ and demanded his books.
At first the ‘givear’ refused, but
after using pressure, he turned
the books over.
An accountant was called in
and the examining of the books
began. The ‘Shtutisher givear’s
house was packed to capacity. The
outside was surrounded with men,
women, and children. Some hung
on the windows. There were no
other activities in town that day.
The boys did not go to the “Tal
mud Torah;’ they were up in the
trees looking in through the win
dows.
‘The accountant was perspiring
over the books; he added, mul
tiplied, subtracted and scraps of
paper with figures were scattered
all over the table.
“Finally after four hours, the
accountant stood up, scratched his
head, and as everyone crowded
around him, he announced, ‘Our
Shtutisher Givear is bankrupt! Ac
cording to his books, he owes more
than he is worth.’
“ ‘Oi vey is meir, cried one of
the women, ‘we lost the only gi
vear’ we had.’ ”
We have a great many ‘Shtu-
tishi Givearim” in Atlanta who
live in beautiful homes with big
mortgages, ride in late model ex
pensive cars that are not paid for,
and owe to all department stores
for everything they have.
They live from hand to mouth,
because according to credit
agencies, the average net income
of Atlanta Jewish families in busi
ness is less than $6,000 a year.
