PANORAMA by David Schwartz
3,000 Candles
The forthcoming celebration of the 3,000th anniversary of
Jerusalem, will be participated in by American Jewry, with a gala
climactiv event at Madison Square Garden on October 20.
EDITOR’S NOTE.
Light the candles! Not one, not
two. But three thousand for
Jerusalem’s birthday cake. Three
thousand are a lot of candles, but
three thousand times three thou
sand candles would not produce
all the light that has gone forth
over the world from Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is venerable with years,
yet she is the youngest of all cities,
growing like a city which has a
new vision. Let us sing to Jeru
salem on hqr birthday as the chil
dren sing:
Happy birthday to you

Bated on the Novel “Brown on Resolution"
Happy birthday, O Jerusalem
Happy birthday to you.
There are quite a number of
Jerusalems in America. There is
a Jerusalem in Rhode Island and
in Arkansas, Ohio and Maryland
and there is Salem in Massa
chusetts which appears to be a
shortened form of Jerusalem. Ac
cording to Josephus, the Salem in
the Bible refers to Jerusalem. All
these are namesakes of the Jeru
salem of Israel. But there is more
to it than this. It is a fact that
there is a little Jerusalem in every
city, town and hamlet of America
—so diffused has been its spirit.
Wrote a non-Jew, George Adam
Smith: “Jerusalem, more than
Rome, more than Athens taught
the nations civil justice and gave
her name to the ideal city men
are ever striving to build on earth,
to the City of God that shall one
day descend from Heaven — the
new Jerusalem.’’ If the world paid
off but a small fraction of its debt
to Jerusalem by buying Israel
bonds, the bond issue would be
oversubscribed in 24 hours,
Jerusalem is predominantly a
Jewish city, but it has samples of
all faiths. I remember when I
was there some years back there
was a waggish statement going
the rounds that “some of the mis
sionaries came to Jerusalem to
do good and they have done very’
well.’’ A witticism directed at
some who had come for idealistic
purposes and had become posses
sors of some of the most lucrative
parcels of Jerusalem real estate.
I cite the story to show that they
laugh in the Holy City. The Arabs
have the “Wailing Wall” now and
when the Jews get it back, I ven
ture to say, it never more will be
called the Walling Wall. In an
cient days, our holiest men were
the great laughters.
I have cheerful news for those
with & little command of Hebrew
who want to go to Jerusalem. It
is one city in Israel where one
may get on quite well with the
English language. One time in fact,
£ found out I could have gotten on
even better with English than
with Hebrew. It happened this
way. I needed some street direc
tions. Seeing a man standing by a
car, I approached him and very
laboriouly tried to piece together
my question in Hebrew. The man
looked at me puzzled, then called
to his friend standing nearby.
“Say,” he said to him in perfectly
good American, “this bozo is talk
ing Hebrew. See if you can make
out what he wants.”
And speaking about language.
I was told an amusing story about
the time under the British man
date, when they named one of the
streets King George Ave. This
name had to be translated into
Hebrew and that is where the rub
came in. There are, it appears,
equivalents in Hebrew for street
and road, but not for avenue. Fin
ally, some wag suggested that
King George Ave. might be called
in Hebrew, Avenue Malkenu (af
ter the well known prayer).
Another thing I would like to
mention about Jerusalem is the
moon. The big Mediterranean
moon is something truly to see or
see by. Newcomers to Israel are
told that you can read a news
paper by the light of the Israel
moon. I tried that. I got a copy
of Haaretz and tried to read it,
but I didn’t do so good. I found
however that this was due to my
inadequate Hebrew.
But who wants to read news
papers under moon? The moon is
made for better things. The moon
is made for lovers and I am
convinced that Jerusalem is a
singularly blessed city for lovers.
Only in Jerusalem could Solomon
have indited the Song of Songs.
“How terrible is love — like ah
army with banners,.” Out of Jeru
salem were to come the great
commandments to love God and
to love one’s neighbor as one’s self.
The ecstacy of Love was to per
meate the whole pattern of life.
Jerusalem is the city of love
and also the city of dreams and
visions, which go together with
love. Jerusalem dreamt of swords
turned to ploughshares, of lions ly
ing down with lambs. When that
dream shall be fulfilled, who
knows but Vishinsky may make a
lechayim to Henry Cabot Lodge!
Last summer, there was held in
Jerusalem, the first world con
ference on deserts. Out of Jeru
salem has come the dream of re
habilitating the deserts of the
world, comprising something like
one fourth of the area of the
world. Think what this would do
to remove economic tensions.
It was said, “Jerusalem is the
city of yesterday, Tel Aviv the
city of today and Haifa, the city
of tomorrow.” This contained at
the time of utterance a kernel of
truth, but only fragmentarily. For
we live in a world of relatively,
Yesterday shall be tomorrow
again. Jerusalem ,is not only the
city of tomorrow but of the tomor
row after tomorrow.
