Million and Half in Israel Bond
Special to The Southern Israelite
The State of Israel Bond issue
was originally proposed as one of
the basic measures to be taken for
the economic success of the young
republic in the Middle East. It
was the expression of the oneness
of Jews throughout the world in
their determination to bring into
reality that which was once a
beautiful dream.
It is therefore interesting to note
what Jewish communities in this
particular area, notably Georgia
and South Carolina have done to
achieve this objective. To date,
the Jewish communities of Geor

scribed for a million and a half
dollars worth of Israel Bonds.
The leading communities in
Georgia are:
Atlanta $652,350
Savannah ... $212,650
Athens ... $60,300
Fitzgerald . $53,500
Augusta S40.000
In South Carolina, the leading
communities are:
Charleston $111,650
Columbia $64,600
Greenville $25,000
The remainder is divided among
various Jewish communities in
this area.
This is the final year of the
State of Israel Bond issue. In ad
dition to the new harbors, better
j communications a n d transporta-
1 tion, new vistas in mining and
1 agriculture, as well as in the field
1 oi small industry made possible
, by the purchase of bonds, the re-
, newed life in the eyes of Israel's
I inhabitants is even more heart
warming. For they are beginning
to see the light. Here is a new
democratic country to be reckoned
with and to be relied on as an
Ally in effort to bring about peace
in a fear-ridden world.
It is therefore accurate to say
that with every purchase of an
Israel Bond one not only makes
j stronger the sinews of the State
of Israel but helps re-enforce the
! structure of peace as well.
Leaders of the Israel Bond
‘ Drive in Georgia and South Caro
lina have affirmed on behalf of
their communities that they would

Jewish PW to Go
From Captivity
To College
NEW YORK — Neither military
service, nor combat duty, nor cap
ture by the North Koreans can
stand in the way of a college edu
cation for Pfc. Bernard K. Ber
man, of Lakewood, N. J., freed at
Panmunjom on August 17 in Op
eration Big Switch.
Pfc. Berman, whose name ap
pears in the Honor Roll files of the
National Jewish Welfare Board s
Bureau of War Records, had been
a prisoner of war for more than
two years. At first reported miss
ing in action, his name was sub
sequently verified by a buddy as
a prisoner of war.
Now twenty, Berman was 17—
he had just been graduated from
Lakewood High School — when he
enlisted in the Army, right after
the outbreak of the fighting in
Korea. Last spring, after almost
two years in a North Korean pris
on camp, he decided that the
cease-fire was at hand and wrote
to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mor
ris Berman of 504 Monmouth Ave
nue, Lakewood, telling them to
submit his application to Rutgers
University for the Fall 1953 term.
Accepted for entrance as an en
gineering student, Bernard, re
ported in good health considering
his ordeal, will be entering college
right on schedule — his own.
