Elliott Levitas
Laudes Rhodes
Scholar Idea
By ADOLPH ROSENBERG
In another few days, Elliott
Levitas of Atlanta will again be
on the high seas bound for Eng
land.
He will reenter Oxford Univer
sity for the second and final year
on the Rhodes Scholarship won
last year.
He had returned to Atlanta
early during the summer to at
tend his brother’s wedding and to
study law at the office of Golden
and Arnall, and, of course, to visit
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis J.
Levitas.
While in England, he visited
Dublin, Ireland, where he saw
members of his father’s family
for the first time. He spent several
days with cousins in his father’s
former home.
Quite enthusiastic over the scope
of his studies and associations
with students from all over the
world, he praised the Oxford
Scholarships for spreading under
standing between nations and peo
ples.
There is a synagogue at Oxford,
run by the students. The Jewish
folk of the town, however, do not
pay much attention to the Jewish
students, he reported.
One thing which he enjoyed
particularly well at Oxford was
his frequent visit into the home
of Cecil Roth, noted Jewish his
torian and member of the Univer
sity faculty. Mr. Roth keeps oepn
house every Saturday afternoon,
he said, and it is the focal point
of the Jewish community which
gravitates there for associations,
serious discussions and the like.
Elliott has not yet acquired a
British accent.
