A MESSAGE FOR THE NEW YEAR
New Birth of Hope
By RABBI JOSEPH COHEN
Or Ve Shalom Synagogue, Atlanta, Ga.
As we stand on the threshold
of the New Year of 5714, oar
minds and hearts indicate to iis
that the New Year signifies a
new beginning, a new birth of
hope, a chance to make a better
life and a better world than that
of the past year. The date is
nothing but a promise of
achievement and of happiness
to be won through our individ
ual endeavors. It is a challenge,
I an invitation to us all, to seek
reconciliation with God and with
our fcllowmen.
With the power granted by
the Divine Providence, we, men,
above any other creature, can
! make use of the TIME which
never ends, with the ability of
looking “Before and After, or
| the Past and Future” and uti
lizes its moments in sheer enjoy
ment of being alive.
No matter how old we be
come, the advent of a New Year
must he a solemn thing for all
of us. It is a time of taking stock,
of thinking and recollecting; a
time to recall with satisfaction,
if not with pride, the advances
we have made; a time to remem
ber with sorrow, if not with re
proach, those noble things we
might have done but did not.
And a time to look to the future,
to make shining plans for the
months to come.
With such thoughts, we Jews
must encompass the historical
cycle of our people; and even
with more than that we have
done in the past, we must in the
coming months, help to streng
then the democratic State of Is
rael in order to overcome the
\ dangers to Israefs security and
\ economic .stability, and to fos-
i ter the spiritual and cultural un
ity of the Jewish people. We
must also set for ourselves the
task of enriching a creative Jew
ish life in the United*States and
join tilth those democratic for
ces in this country in order that
the American dream may come
true.
Note that the cease-fire and
truce are stwccssfully establish
ed in Korea, it is inevitable that
there should be some soul-
searching atnong us. We shall
he asking whether or not the ac
complishments of the battlefield
have justified the sacrifices in
volved. Morally, it is difficult to
justify war in any case. Then,
what is the ultimate objective?
None of tis can guess. But, yet,
it is our confidence and trust on
the Omnipotent that this Bosh
Hashoruih will bring us a mes
sage of hope and redemption to
humanity. It promises if only
man will put the evil away from
his mind and heart then he mail
live in peace and prosperity. It
demands honesty, justice, and
good faith for all mankind in
order to hold high the torch of
freedom. It holds out to man,
life or death, the blessing or the
curse—it exhorts him to choose
'ife that we may live.
It is with the spirit of renewed
dedication to the highest ideals
of brotherhood arul social jus
tice which are the cardinal points
of our prayers to God on the
High Holy days: “HASTEN
THE TIME WHEN THE
MIGHTY SHALL BE JUST
AND THE JUST MIGHTY;
WHEN ALL CHILDREN OF
MEN SHALL FORM ONE
BAND OF BROTHERHOOD;
WHEN NATIONAL ARRO
GANCE AND OPPRESSION
SHALL HAVE PASSED A-
WAY, LIKE SO MUCH
SMOKE FROM THE EARTH.”
that we solemnly hear the stir
ring sounds of the Shofar call
ing us to look back on 5713 and
the mistakes ice committed in
it, and learn to live in reality and ! v
set a better pattern of life that
prosperous New Year of 5714,
and in unison we proclaim: LE-
SHANA TOVA TtKATEVU.
